The Premiere Pro plugins Reddit recommends, counted thread by thread
Across 14 r/premiere and r/editors threads from November 2024 to August 2026, Reddit's favourite Premiere Pro plugin is Excalibur: 60 mentions in 12 threads, the top comment score and no posts from its maker. Mister Horse's Animation Composer appears in the most threads (13), followed by Watchtower (9) and Film Impact (8). Several editors add that no plugin is essential.
- 14 threads and 493 comments read, from r/premiere (13) and r/editors (1), Nov 2024 to Aug 2026
- Excalibur: 60 mentions, the most of any tool, none from its maker
- AutoCut and Brevidy: 5 mentions each read like their own teams posting
- No thread mentions mouzeclick. We make it, and say so where it appears
How did we count Reddit's Premiere Pro plugin recommendations?
We read the 14 most-commented recommendation threads about Premiere Pro plugins posted between November 2024 and August 2026: 13 in r/premiere and one in r/editors, 493 comments in all, moderator bots left out. A script counted every post or comment that names a product, once per comment, added up those comments' scores, and flagged comments that read like a maker promoting its own tool ("I built", "co-founder", "our plugin"). That flag is a pattern match, so it misses makers who don't say who they are.
The threads came from title searches for "plugins", "plugin" and "extensions" in r/premiere, r/editors and r/VideoEditing, read through the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit posts on 31 October 2026. Of 332 results, about 66 ask for recommendations; most of the rest are install problems. Two searches timed out and the r/premiere searches stop at 100 results, so some older 2024 threads are missing.
We aren't affiliated with Reddit or with any tool here. We make mouzeclick, a mouse app with Premiere Pro tools; no thread mentions it, so our view sits in its own labelled section. Opinions are paraphrased and linked to the comment they come from, and every thread is listed under Sources.
Which Premiere Pro plugins does Reddit recommend most?
Excalibur, by a distance. It has the most mentions (60) and the highest summed comment score (397), and none of those mentions came from its maker. Mister Horse turns up in more threads, 13 of the 14, but with 36 mentions. The top 15, by threads and then mentions:
| Plugin | Threads (of 14) | Mentions | Comment score | Posts that read like the maker's |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mister Horse (Premiere Composer, now Animation Composer) | 13 | 36 | 169 | 0 |
| Excalibur (Knights of the Editing Table) | 12 | 60 | 397 | 0 |
| Watchtower (Knights of the Editing Table) | 9 | 27 | 193 | 0 |
| Film Impact | 8 | 23 | 118 | 1 |
| Knights of the Editing Table, named as a brand | 8 | 14 | 110 | 0 |
| Grave Robber (Knights of the Editing Table) | 8 | 11 | 60 | 0 |
| Captioneer | 8 | 11 | 10 | 0 |
| Brevidy | 7 | 13 | 78 | 5 |
| Boris FX (Sapphire, Continuum, Mocha) | 7 | 9 | 14 | 0 |
| AutoCut | 6 | 15 | 19 | 5 |
| BeatEdit | 6 | 7 | 72 | 0 |
| Red Giant Universe (Maxon) | 5 | 12 | 53 | 1 |
| Autopod | 5 | 7 | 13 | 1 |
| Anubis (Battle Axe) | 5 | 6 | 7 | 0 |
| Copy Pasta (Plugin Play) | 4 | 8 | 26 | 1 |
"Comment score" adds up the votes on the mentioning comments, so one popular reply can lift a tool a long way. Discount AutoCut and Brevidy a little: five of each one's mentions read like posts from its own team. Just below the cut-off sit Dagger (4 threads, 7 mentions), Neat Video (4, 6) and AutoHotkey (3, 12).
Is Excalibur worth it, according to Reddit?
Most replies that mention it say yes. Excalibur is a command palette for Premiere Pro: press a key, type, and apply an effect, preset or transition, or run a chain of steps you've saved as your own command. The highest-scored comment in our sample (61 points) calls it a must-have that most editors already use. A reply in another thread puts it in five words: "Excalibur is the right answer." (r/premiere, April 2025)
What people praise
- It reaches things Premiere's own keyboard shortcuts can't map, and it's called the best utility plugin.
- It's not a subscription.
- One AutoHotkey user says it does jobs a key-macro tool can't, such as a six-frame cross-fade on every selected audio clip, and keeps both.
What people complain about
- It takes effort to learn. A fan of the maker's other tools still finds the slow way quicker for now and is waiting for Excalibur 2.
- Presets applied from its console lose their easing, one buyer says.
- One user says Dagger and Excalibur made large projects too slow to edit until both were uninstalled.
From the maker's pages: $120 plus VAT, two machines per user; the page doesn't say outright that it's one-time, though Reddit describes it that way. Premiere Pro 2020 or newer, Windows or macOS 10.14.5 and up; version 1.3.5 came out on 27 July 2026.
What do editors say about Watchtower, Grave Robber and Dagger?
They come from the same maker as Excalibur, Knights of the Editing Table, and editors who like one tend to install several. Watchtower is named in 9 of the 14 threads and Grave Robber in 8.
- Watchtower watches folders on your drive or a NAS and imports new files into Premiere bins by itself. One team uses it so client footage lands in the project with nobody importing it (43 points), and another user finds it hard to go back to importing by hand. The pushback: one commenter calls it rsync with a nicer interface, and an editor at a large organisation would rather not let colleagues' folder changes reshape their bins.
- Grave Robber un-nests clips inside nested or multicam sequences. In the r/editors thread, one reply names it with Watchtower as the two they use most.
- Dagger is a free, cut-down Excalibur: select a clip, press its shortcut, type an effect's name and apply it (22 points). Someone asked how that differs from the Effects panel. A comment that it wasn't worth a plugin to save one click was voted down.
Why does Mister Horse come up in so many threads?
Because it's the free place to start. Mister Horse's Premiere plugin, called Premiere Composer until it was renamed Animation Composer in June 2026, is a library of transitions, titles, text effects and whips, and it also browses your own MOGRTs and sound effects. It's named in 13 of the 14 threads.
- The top reply in the Best Plugins thread says it was a lifesaver.
- For social edits, a reply in r/editors rates it a top pick for a quick bank of transitions and text effects, with whips they haven't found elsewhere.
- The complaint is the move to a subscription. Some are glad they bought packs before it changed; one suggests paying for one month to finish a project.
From the maker's pricing page: a free plan with over 1,000 assets and four tools, allowed for commercial work; a paid plan at $19.90 a month, or $198 billed yearly, with over 6,000 assets. It needs Premiere 2025 or newer, on Mac or Windows, and animations keep working if the plugin is removed. More in our Animation Composer comparison.
Do you still need to buy Film Impact?
Maybe not: you may already have it. Film Impact's real-time transitions and effects were a long-standing r/premiere favourite: one reply says they change how you animate in Premiere, and another found them a big help on a quick turnaround. Both point to a 30-day trial.
The news in the newer threads: a reply in a March 2026 thread, written as if from Adobe, says Adobe bought Film Impact and gives the whole suite to every Premiere user at no extra cost, whatever their version, and a reply in a September 2025 thread links Adobe's announcement of more than 90 new effects, transitions and animations. We haven't checked this with Adobe, so read both before you pay for Film Impact on its own.
The old complaint: while Film Impact was a subscription, an agency editor said cancelling would leave transitions in old client videos unusable.
Which caption and silence plugins do editors mention?
They're popular and heavily promoted, so read their counts with care.
- Brevidy (7 threads; 5 of its 13 mentions read like its own team). Praised as the most controllable TikTok-style captions and, despite the price, worth it for animated subtitles. Others can't justify the price or are out of room for another subscription.
- Captioneer (8 threads, no maker posts flagged). Liked for animated captions with lots of control, no SRT round trip and a one-off payment; a short-form editor calls it central to their workflow.
- AutoCut (6 threads; 5 of 15 mentions flagged). One user says it cut 40 minutes of facecam rushes to about 27 in under 15 seconds, and another finds its captions accurate. The complaints are about installs that fail with an error.
- Autopod (5 threads, 7 mentions) handles multicam and jump-cut edits. Three of its mentions are users tired of its subscription or sorry they paid it, replying to rival makers' pitches.
Both jobs got their own Reddit write-ups: see what Reddit says about silence removers and what Reddit says about auto captions. From AutoCut's own page: a silence-only plan at $79 billed yearly and a 14-day trial, no card.
Which effects and audio plugins get the most praise?
A handful, with notes on cost.
- Neat Video is called the best denoiser available (11 points) and a must-have for noise reduction.
- Boris FX Sapphire is rated highly, but Continuum and Sapphire are subscriptions or expensive licences with paid upgrades.
- Red Giant Universe is easier and more polished than Sapphire for quick effects, says the post that started one thread, but it's a subscription.
- BeatEdit is a must if you cut to music often, and not a subscription, though pricey.
What do Reddit users complain about?
Subscriptions, first and loudest. The newcomer who started the Best Plugins thread asked whether plugins are mostly subscriptions now, and the same wish runs through many threads: pay once and own it.
- Subscriptions that hold old projects hostage. Cancel, and old transitions can become unusable.
- Makers posting as fans. Brevidy and AutoCut staff reply often, and r/premiere now sends developers to a monthly thread with its own flair.
- Slowdowns. One editor blames two plugins for making large projects uneditable, and a newer question about whether merely installing several plugins causes lag got its own thread.
- Installs that break. One user gets a "something went wrong" error and no fix so far.
What does Reddit say to do before you buy plugins?
Learn what Premiere already does. An editor who runs a full kit still says no plugin is a must for 99% of people.
- Check the built-in effects. For punch-in zooms, Premiere's own Move, Grow and Shrink effects do the job (7 points), and Film Impact's effects may already be in your copy.
- Map your shortcuts. One fan says Excalibur gets much better once you map single keys to your top effects. Our Premiere Pro mouse shortcuts guide does the same on the mouse.
- Learn After Effects before you pay for an expensive effects suite, a hobbyist is told.
- Use the trial on a real job. Film Impact's month-long trial got one editor through a rush project.
- Buy for the job that eats your week, one at a time. Our own best Premiere Pro plugins guide sorts tools by job, with prices.
Where mouzeclick fits (our view)
This section is ours, not Reddit's: none of the 14 threads mentions mouzeclick. It overlaps with some of Reddit's favourites and replaces none of the others.
- Like Dagger: Search effects finds any installed effect or transition as you type; Enter applies it, Shift+Enter also pins it to the Tool wheel, which holds 112 Premiere Pro tools in 12 segments on any mouse. The app adds per-app buttons, gestures and recorded macros. For Excalibur's chained Premiere commands from the keyboard, Excalibur is the better pick.
- Like Grave Robber: Unnest takes apart nests, multicam clips and merged clips in one press, and puts everything back if Premiere refuses a step half-way.
- Like AutoCut and the caption plugins: the mouzeclick Studio panel has a silence remover (Windows and Mac) and captions written on your computer by Whisper, in 47 languages including Hinglish (Windows only).
- Like BeatEdit: mouzebeat sets beat markers and cuts on 1, 2, 4 or 8 beats.
What it doesn't do: watch folders like Watchtower, a big template library like Mister Horse, noise reduction like Neat Video, or effects like Sapphire.
The limits: one plan at $25 a month or $249 a year, or $499 once for one of the first 100 lifetime keys, which works for as long as mouzeclick runs. No free tier, just a 3-day trial with no card. Captions, Retakes and the Premiere Pro workspace are Windows only, and the app needs an internet connection while it runs. See the Premiere Pro tools page, the all-in-one Premiere Pro extension guide and the pricing section.
Try the Premiere toolkit we make, free for 3 days. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.
Questions people ask
What is the best Premiere Pro plugin according to Reddit?
Excalibur. In our count of 14 r/premiere and r/editors threads it has 60 mentions in 12 threads and a summed comment score of 397, more than any other tool, with no posts from its maker. Mister Horse appears in more threads (13) with fewer mentions. Treat it as a popularity count from 2024 to 2026, not a test of which plugin suits your edits. What is Excalibur, and isn't it just keyboard shortcuts?
It's a command palette for Premiere Pro from Knights of the Editing Table: you press a key, type, and apply an effect, preset or transition, or run your own chain of steps. A Redditor who asked the same question was told it reaches actions Premiere's shortcuts can't map, and one AutoHotkey user keeps both. It costs $120 plus VAT for two machines, per the maker's page.Which free Premiere Pro plugins does Reddit recommend?
Dagger, the free cut-down Excalibur that searches and applies effects, and Mister Horse's free plan, with over 1,000 assets and commercial use allowed. Replies also say Film Impact's effects now come with Premiere after Adobe bought it, so check your effects list first. For the Redditor who asked whether AEJuice is free: it has a free tier of 35 products. Are most Premiere Pro plugins subscriptions now?
Many are, and Reddit complains about it often. Mister Horse's paid plan, AutoCut, Brevidy and Red Giant Universe are subscriptions. Redditors describe Excalibur, BeatEdit and Captioneer as one-off purchases, though in caption threads others say Captioneer is sold by subscription too. If paying once matters to you, check the maker's pricing page before the trial ends. Will installing a lot of plugins slow Premiere Pro down?
It can. One editor in our sample says Dagger and Excalibur made large projects uneditable until both were removed, and r/premiere has a whole thread asking about plugin lag. Nobody in the threads we read posted a measured test. Install one plugin at a time, work with it for a week, and remove what you don't use.Do these plugins run in the cloud or on my computer?
Effect, transition and command tools such as Excalibur, Film Impact and Mister Horse work inside Premiere on your computer. Caption and silence tools vary. FireCut says its transcription features need an internet connection, while Premiere's own Speech to Text works offline once a language pack is installed. mouzeclick writes captions on your computer (Windows only), but the app needs a connection to check your licence.Does Reddit recommend mouzeclick?
No. None of the 14 threads or 493 comments we read mentions it, and neither does any of the 332 search results. We make mouzeclick, which is why it's on this page at all, in a section labelled as our view. Its 3-day trial needs no card, so you can test it on the same edit as the Reddit favourite you're considering. When is Excalibur 2 coming out?
We didn't find a date. One Redditor who prefers the slow way for now says they'll switch when Excalibur 2 arrives, and one who asked for a date was told it's still being worked on, with pieces released in the maker's other tools as they're ready. The change log shows version 1.3.5 on 27 July 2026, so it's still updated.Sources
