Removing silence in Premiere Pro: what 14 Reddit threads recommend

Updated 2026-10-31 · by the mouzeclick team · Also in Español, Português (Brasil), Bahasa Indonesia

Across 14 threads in r/premiere, r/VideoEditing and r/podcasting from May 2024 to August 2026, Reddit's first answer is Premiere's own Text-Based Editing pause removal (8 threads, 16 mentions), then AutoCut (6 threads, 20 mentions, 4 from its own team). The built-in tool's complaints: no loudness threshold, too little padding between cuts, and no support for some languages.

  • 14 threads and 175 comments: 11 from r/premiere, 2 from r/VideoEditing, 1 from r/podcasting
  • A thin sample: searches in r/editors and r/NewTubers failed, so the order below the top two is rough
  • Free routes Redditors use: Premiere's pause removal, a noise gate, Audacity's Truncate Silence, FFmpeg
  • No thread mentions mouzeclick. We make it, and our view is labelled as ours

How did we read Reddit on removing silence in Premiere Pro?

We read 14 threads about cutting silence and pauses, posted between May 2024 and August 2026: 11 in r/premiere, 2 in r/VideoEditing and 1 in r/podcasting, 175 comments in all, moderator bots left out. A script counted every post or comment that names a tool, once per comment, added up those comments' scores, and flagged comments that read like a maker promoting its own tool. That flag is a pattern match, so it misses makers who stay quiet about it.

The threads came from title searches for "silence", "pauses", "dead air" and "autocut", read through the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit posts on 31 October 2026. They returned 119 threads, about 90 of them on topic and 26 with five or more comments. This sample is thinner than we'd like. Every search in r/editors and r/NewTubers timed out, as did the "jump cuts" searches, so those communities aren't covered, and most threads have under 20 comments. The top two answers are clear; below them, tools are one to three threads apart, so treat that order as rough.

We aren't affiliated with Reddit or with any tool here. We make mouzeclick, whose Premiere Pro panel includes a silence remover; no thread mentions it, so our view sits in its own labelled section near the end. Opinions are paraphrased and linked to the comment they come from, and every thread is listed under Sources.

Which silence removers does Reddit mention most?

Premiere's own pause removal, then AutoCut. The built-in route comes up in 8 of the 14 threads, usually as the first reply to someone shopping for a plugin. AutoCut has the most mentions (20), but four of them read like replies from its own team.

The first row groups phrases such as "text-based", "text panel" and "delete pauses", so it counts a method, not a product name. Three of SilenceSlicer's four mentions are the same link posted in three threads within minutes, so read them as promotion. Shhh from aescripts, Pro Tools' Strip Silence and Hindenburg sit just below the table with one thread each.

Is Premiere's built-in silence removal good enough?

It's Reddit's first answer, and some people asking for a plugin didn't know it was there. In a thread about a free open-source remover, one reply (8 points) points out that Premiere can already do this, and another reader had no idea.

Where it is. One reply gives the route: transcribe the sequence, open the Text-Based Editing transcript, use the filter to show silences, remove them, and set the minimum silence length in the transcript's view options. Adobe's Speech to Text is included in the Premiere subscription and covers 18 languages.

What people complain about. One commenter's verdict: "Premiere built in silence remover suck." (r/premiere, March 2026). The reasons given across the threads:

The fixes Redditors offer: put a noise gate on the voice track first, so bleed doesn't count as speech, and transcribe only the microphone rather than the whole mixed file. Our Premiere Pro silence remover guide walks through the native steps in more detail.

Is AutoCut worth it, according to Reddit?

Users in our sample say it works; the arguments are about paying for it. AutoCut is a paid panel for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve that cuts silences, writes captions and more; its captions get their own write-up in what Reddit says about auto captions.

  • Praise: one user reports good results with a 14-day trial at about $7 a month. Another found the trial extends by a day each time you try one of its features, and liked the captions.
  • The cost over time: the person who started the AutoCut alternative thread had paid monthly for years while using almost only the silence tool. A reply calls AutoCut's and Autopod's subscriptions insulting, though that commenter was building a rival.
  • Trials: one user believes a trial is locked to one machine, and says the developer reset it when they asked for more time.
  • Promotion: a reply from its co-founder in the AutoCut vs FireCut thread was called too commercial in a reply.

From AutoCut's own page (31 Oct 2026): a silence-only plan at $79 billed yearly ($6.6 a month), the AI Plan at $14.9 a month billed yearly, Mac and Windows, one computer at a time, and a 14-day trial with no card (one block on the page says 28 days). Our AutoCut alternative page compares it in full.

Which other silence removers come up, and what do people say?

A handful of paid tools, each with one or two fans. None has enough mentions to rank with confidence; for the wider plugin picture, see the Premiere Pro plugins Reddit recommends.

Is there a free way to remove silence?

Audio tools, mostly. The highest-scored reply in our whole sample (18 points) is in r/podcasting: Audacity's Truncate Silence works very well, and it's free.

What goes wrong with automatic silence removal?

Two things: picking the threshold, and trusting what got cut. One Redditor asks how you'd know the threshold; another, how you'd spot a word clipped by mistake. Nobody in these threads gives a single number.

  • Rushed speech. Cut every gap to nothing and the result sounds too fast.
  • The wrong pauses. Automatic tools pick pauses badly and blend them badly, says one editor, who still cuts by hand.
  • Pauses that matter. The second-highest-scored comment in our sample (13 points) calls pacing an art its author would never hand to automation, and another r/podcasting commenter keeps some pauses on purpose, to give listeners room to take in what was said.
  • Subscriptions for one job. The AutoCut alternative thread exists because of this.

What does Reddit say to do first?

Try what Premiere already has, on a copy, before you pay for anything.

  1. Run Premiere's pause removal on a duplicate sequence and listen through it.
  2. Clean the voice track first if the mic picked up game audio or music: gate it, or transcribe the mic only.
  3. Keep some air. Set a minimum pause length rather than cutting every gap.
  4. For silence at the start of many clips, ripple-trim with the Q key (8 points), or select every cut with the ripple edit tool and trim them together. A script in Automation Blocks is the batch route.
  5. Trial a plugin on a real file before subscribing, and check what happens to your projects if you stop paying.

Pauses often hide retakes and stumbles too; our retake remover guide covers that next step.

Where mouzeclick fits (our view)

This section is ours, not Reddit's: none of the 14 threads mentions mouzeclick. Its silence remover answers two of the complaints above, the missing threshold and the missing padding, but it isn't the cheapest way to cut silence.

  • Threshold and padding you set. The Silence tab in the mouzeclick Studio panel reads the sound level rather than a transcript. By default it cuts pauses quieter than −40 dB lasting 0.40 s or more, and keeps 0.12 s around speech so it doesn't sound rushed. Change any of the three.
  • Nothing until you say so. Analyse runs first, nothing changes until you press Remove, and a copy of the sequence is kept, which answers the Redditor who wanted an undo for an over-eager pass.
  • Music left alone. A music bed underneath isn't cut.
  • On your computer, Windows and Mac. The sound is read locally.
  • Presets on Windows. The Premiere Pro workspace (Windows only) adds a Cut desk with Dialogue, Podcast and Aggressive presets (−48, −44 and −38 dB) and a choice of Remove + ripple or Cuts only, for anyone who wants the cuts made but not deleted.

The limits: it runs in Premiere Pro, not DaVinci Resolve. There's no free tier, just a 3-day trial with no card, and the app needs an internet connection while it runs. One plan costs $25 a month or $249 a year, and also covers captions and Retakes (Windows), timeline tools, 22 extensions and the mouse app. In US dollars, AutoCut's silence-only plan costs less; if silence is your only job, a silence-only tool is the sensible buy. Details are in our silence remover guide, on the Premiere Pro tools page and in the pricing section.

Questions people ask

What is the best silence remover for Premiere Pro according to Reddit?Premiere's own Text-Based Editing pause removal is the most common answer: it comes up in 8 of the 14 threads we read. AutoCut is the most-named plugin, in 6 threads with 20 mentions, four of which read like its own team's replies. Beyond those two the sample is too thin to rank, with TimeBolt, FireCut, Descript and Autopod one to three threads apart.
Where is the remove-silence option in Premiere Pro?It's in the transcript, not the captions panel. Transcribe the sequence, open the Text-Based Editing transcript, use the filter to show pauses or silences, and remove them all at once. The minimum pause length is in the transcript's view options. It needs a transcript, so it works only in languages Premiere can transcribe; Adobe lists 18.
Is there a good AutoCut alternative, according to Reddit?Redditors name TimeBolt, FireCut, Descript, Autopod and Shhh, plus audio routes such as Audacity's free Truncate Silence and Reaper's silence tools. Each has only one or two fans in our sample, so try them on the same file. If cost is the reason to switch, compare AutoCut's own silence-only plan, $79 billed yearly on its page, before moving.
Can I remove silence across several clips at once?Yes, in a few ways. Premiere's transcript pause removal works on the whole sequence. To trim silence at the start of many clips, one Redditor suggests the ripple edit tool, if the silence is the same length on every clip: select every cut and trim them together. A reply in the AutoCut alternative thread says Shhh cuts several tracks at once. For a very large batch, another reply suggests a script in Automation Blocks.
How do I choose the right silence threshold?Start with a preset and listen. Redditors who use Reaper or a noise gate set a dB level below which sound counts as silence, and nobody offers one number for every room. A quiet booth tolerates a lower threshold than a noisy office. Cut a copy of the sequence, play it through, and adjust before you touch the original.
Does Premiere's pause removal work in languages other than English?Only in the languages Premiere can transcribe. Adobe lists 18 for Speech to Text, and Redditors note that some, such as Balkan languages, aren't covered, which leaves them without the built-in route. Tools that cut by sound level rather than a transcript, such as a noise gate, Audacity or Reaper, don't care what language is spoken.
How do I know what a silence remover cut by mistake?Work on a copy and review before committing. Reaper marks the silent parts before you delete them, and tools that analyse first and cut second give you the same chance. Whatever you use, play the result through once at normal speed: a clipped word is easy to hear and hard to see on a waveform.
Does Reddit mention mouzeclick for silence removal? No. None of the 14 threads, 175 comments or 119 search results we checked mentions it. We make mouzeclick, so it's on this page in a section labelled as our view. Its Studio silence remover runs on Windows and Mac with a 3-day trial and no card, so you can test it against Premiere's own tool on the same clip.
