Auto captions in Premiere Pro: what 14 Reddit threads say works

Updated 2026-10-31 · by the mouzeclick team · Also in Español, Português (Brasil), Bahasa Indonesia

Across 14 threads in r/premiere, r/editors and r/NewTubers from March 2024 to October 2026, the most common advice on Reddit is to start with Premiere's own Speech to Text, fix the transcript before you create captions, and add a tool only for animated styles or missing languages. Among other tools, CapCut comes up in 9 threads, Brevidy and Captioneer in 8 each, Submachine in 6.

  • 14 threads and 394 comments: 8 from r/premiere, 4 from r/editors, 2 from r/NewTubers
  • Whisper, the free open speech model, or a tool built on it came up in 10 of the 14 threads
  • 6 of Brevidy's 22 mentions read like posts from its own team
  • No thread mentions mouzeclick. We make it, and our view is labelled as ours

How did we read Reddit on Premiere Pro auto captions?

We read 14 threads about choosing an auto caption tool or about the quality of Premiere's own captions, posted between March 2024 and October 2026: 8 in r/premiere, 4 in r/editors and 2 in r/NewTubers, 394 comments in all, moderator bots left out. A script counted every post or comment that names a tool, once per comment, added up those comments' scores, and flagged comments that read like a maker promoting its own tool. The flag is a pattern match, so it misses makers who don't say who they are.

The threads came from title searches for "captions", "subtitles" and "transcribe" in those subreddits and r/VideoEditing, read through the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit posts on 31 October 2026. The searches returned 714 threads, 187 of them with five or more comments; many are export or styling questions. We read the 14 most-commented about which tool to use. Five searches hit the 100-result cap, so the r/premiere "captions" results only reach back to November 2025.

We aren't affiliated with Reddit or with any tool here. We make mouzeclick, whose Premiere Pro panel writes captions; no thread mentions it, so our view sits in its own labelled section near the end. Opinions are paraphrased and linked to the comment they come from, and every thread is listed under Sources.

Which auto caption tools does Reddit mention most?

Premiere's own Speech to Text comes up in every thread, because every thread starts from it. Among things you'd buy or install, CapCut leads (9 threads, 45 mentions), then Brevidy, Captioneer and Submachine. Whisper, the free open speech model, or tools built on it (some of them paid) appear in 10 of the 14 threads.

Note on the first row: it counts words such as "transcribe", "speech to text" and "text panel", so it measures how much each thread talks about the built-in feature, not how often it's recommended. Rows marked as methods aren't products. Discount Brevidy a little: 6 of its 22 mentions read like posts from its own team. Just below the table sit Rev (3 threads), FireCut (3) and Temi (2).

How accurate are Premiere Pro's auto captions, according to Reddit?

Good with clear speech, shaky with accents, names and jargon. The top-scored comment in our sample (34 points) puts it at "about 80-90% accurate in most cases where the speakers are speaking clearly" (r/editors, March 2024). The next, at 25 points, is shorter: proofread, because it isn't perfect.

The good reports

The complaints

From Adobe's own page: Speech to Text is included in the Premiere subscription, transcribes 18 languages including Hindi, translates captions into 27, and works offline once a language pack is installed.

How do editors fix Premiere's auto captions?

Fix the transcript, not the captions. Two r/editors replies give the same tip two years apart: correct the words in the Text panel before you create captions, because the captions inherit every fix and find and replace works in the transcript, not on the caption track.

Our auto captions in Premiere Pro guide walks through the native steps.

Why do so many editors bring up CapCut?

Because it's the quickest route to animated caption styles, and it's what clients copy. The most-commented thread in our sample, started by an agency editor, asks when Premiere will catch up with it.

Which Premiere Pro caption plugins do editors rate?

Four come up, each with a trade-off between control and how you pay.

Both Captioneer and Submachine are described as one-time purchases in one reply and as subscriptions in another, so check each maker's page. The caption plugins also appear in our count of the Premiere Pro plugins Reddit recommends.

Can you get auto captions for free?

Yes: Premiere's own, if you already pay for Premiere, or Whisper outside it. Whisper, or a tool built on it, turns up in 10 of the 14 threads.

Other routes: DaVinci Resolve has had animated captions built in for about two years, though another reply asks whether they're only in the paid Studio version, and one editor finds it more accurate than Premiere. One user finds Descript transcribes better and exports an SRT, though its animation styles are limited. For broadcast, one editor says human captioning such as Rev, then a proofread, is still the way.

What does Reddit say to do before you buy a caption tool?

Get the most out of Premiere's own captions first, then pay only for the gap that's left.

  1. Transcribe, then fix the transcript in the Text panel, with the right language picked.
  2. Set duration and line length in the caption settings, and save one style you can reuse.
  3. Name the gap. Animated word-by-word styles point to Submachine, Captioneer, Brevidy or CaptionPlug. A missing language points to Whisper. Broadcast work points to human captions.
  4. Check how you'll pay: monthly, yearly, credits or once. One Redditor found prices shown per month were billed yearly.
  5. Trial on a real video, with your hardest speaker, before you commit, and check that styled captions stay inside each platform's safe zone.

If your captions start from a cut with long pauses, see what Reddit says about silence removers; caption after the cuts so the timing holds.

Where mouzeclick fits (our view)

This section is ours, not Reddit's: none of the 14 threads mentions mouzeclick. Its captions use Whisper, the open speech model Redditors run for free, inside Premiere Pro, on Windows only.

  • Fix before you create. The Captions tab in the mouzeclick Studio panel transcribes, shows the captions as a list to read through and correct, and only then puts them on the timeline: creating them is a separate press, after the list. Remember this fix carries a correction into later transcripts.
  • Written on your computer. Pick Fast (60 MB), Accurate (190 MB) or Best (574 MB); the model downloads once, and after that your audio never leaves the machine.
  • 47 languages, Hinglish in Roman letters among them, plus Translate to English. Try yours in the trial before you buy.
  • Styled or plain. Use Premiere's own caption track, or 289 word-timed looks in 27 families, with a Word by word preset.
  • A second tool on Windows. The Premiere Pro workspace has a Caption studio with Captions, Word Pop, Transcript and Editor modes and eight on-device speech models.

The limits: captions are Windows only, so on a Mac Premiere's own Speech to Text is your route (the Mac page lists what does run there). You still proofread. The app needs an internet connection while it runs, to check your licence. For Redditors who want to buy outright, the only one-time option is $499 for one of the first 100 lifetime keys, which works for as long as mouzeclick runs; otherwise it's $25 a month or $249 a year, with a 3-day trial and no card. Free Whisper tools cost nothing if you don't mind the SRT step. More on the Premiere Pro tools page, in our auto captions guide, the Hinglish captions guide and the pricing section.

Try the captions we make, free for 3 days on Windows. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.

Questions people ask

How accurate are Premiere Pro's auto captions, according to Reddit?About 80 to 90% with clear speakers, says the top-scored comment in our sample, and up to 95% for one editor working with European accents in English. One editor working with non-native speakers puts it at about 50%, and brand names and jargon trip it up. The common advice: proofread before you export, and fix the transcript rather than the caption track.
Can Premiere Pro make animated, CapCut-style captions? Not out of the box, say Redditors from 2024 to 2026: the transcript highlights words as they're spoken, but the captions don't animate. Editors use Submachine, Captioneer, Brevidy or CaptionPlug inside Premiere, build their own MOGRT, round-trip through After Effects, or finish in CapCut. One Redditor says DaVinci Resolve has had animated captions for about two years; another thinks they need the paid Studio version.
What's the best free way to auto-generate captions, according to Reddit? If you have Premiere, its own Speech to Text, which costs nothing extra. Without it, Whisper: Subtitle Edit is free, open source and runs on your computer, and its SRT imports straight into Premiere. CapCut used to be the free answer, but Redditors report that auto captions now need a paid plan, on Mac especially.
Is there a caption plugin you can buy outright?Redditors name CaptionPlug as a one-off purchase that runs a bundled local model or uses your own API key. Captioneer and Submachine are described as one-time purchases in one reply and as subscription products in another, so check each maker's pricing page. Brevidy is sold on credits or a subscription.
Why does Premiere's Transcribe get stuck or show nothing?Sometimes it has finished and just isn't showing it. One Redditor's fix is to close and reopen the project, and the transcript appears. Another solved it by going back a few Premiere versions. Also check the language picked for transcription: a 14-point reply says the wrong one gives results that look broken.
Which languages do Premiere's auto captions support?Adobe lists 18 transcription languages, including Hindi, and translation of captions into 27. Redditors in our sample asked for Bahasa (Indonesian or Malay), Australian English and better British English. For a language Premiere doesn't cover, the free route Redditors suggest is Whisper, through Subtitle Edit or a similar app, then importing the SRT.
Should I correct the transcript or the captions? The transcript. Fix words in the Text panel before you press Create Captions, and every correction carries into the captions. Find and replace works across the whole transcript, while on the caption track you edit one caption at a time. Two r/editors replies, two years apart, give exactly this tip.
Does Reddit recommend mouzeclick for captions? No. None of the 14 threads, 394 comments or 714 search results we checked mentions it. We make mouzeclick, so it appears here in a section labelled as our view. Its captions run Whisper on your computer inside Premiere Pro on Windows, with a 3-day trial and no card, so you can compare it with Premiere's own captions on the same clip.
