Safe zone guides in Premiere Pro for Reels, Shorts and TikTok
Premiere Pro's built-in Safe Margins only draw generic title-safe and action-safe boxes; they don't show where TikTok, Reels or Shorts put their buttons and captions. mouzeclick Studio's Guides tab draws each app's interface and safe zone over your video, from 65 platform presets in 8 groups, as one clip on its own track. Hidden guides are not exported, and the tab warns you while they show.
- 65 platform presets in 8 groups: short video, stories, feed, India, China and East Asia, broadcast and cinema, widescreen, more regions.
- Interface, safe zone, centre lines, rule of thirds and a grid, each switched on or off.
- One clip, "⚠ GUIDES (mouzeclick)" with a Magenta label, on a track of its own. Your footage is never moved or changed.
- Show / Hide in one press; switched off, the guides are not exported.
- Works on Windows and Mac, in the Studio's Guides tab.
Why do safe zones matter for Reels, Shorts and TikTok?
Because the app covers part of your frame. On a phone, TikTok, Reels and Shorts draw their own buttons, the username, the post caption and a progress bar over your 9:16 video, and anything underneath is hard to read or hidden.
mouzeclick's TikTok preset, at 1080 × 1920, keeps 130 px clear at the top, 484 px at the bottom, 140 px on the right and 44 px on the left. That bottom margin is a quarter of the frame. The Instagram Reels preset is stricter still at the bottom: 35% of the height, about 670 px. Captions are what usually get lost, because the natural place for them, low in the frame, is exactly where the apps put their own text.
Apps change their layouts, so treat any guide as close, not exact. The Guides tab says as much under the preview, and every preset's margins can be adjusted. A private test upload is still the final check before a campaign goes out.
Does Premiere Pro have safe zone guides built in?
Only generic ones. In the Program Monitor's Settings menu (the wrench), Safe Margins draws title-safe and action-safe rectangles. They come from broadcast TV: the same boxes on every frame shape, with no idea where an app puts its like button. The Program Monitor can also show rulers and guide lines you drag in yourself and save as a template; they stay out of the export, but they are straight lines you measure and place by hand, not the app's interface.
The common workaround is a PNG overlay of the app's interface on the top video track. It works, with one catch: Premiere has no layer that shows in the monitor but stays out of the export. Before you export, right-click the overlay clip and untick Enable, or switch off that track's output, and do it on every sequence that has one. Forget once and the fake buttons are burned into the client's video.
How do I add safe zone guides in Premiere Pro with mouzeclick Studio?
Open the Studio's Guides tab, choose a platform, tick what you want to see, then press Apply. The guides go on as one clip over the whole sequence.
- In Premiere Pro, open Window › Extensions › mouzeclick Studio and click Guides. The tab reads the open sequence first.
- Click Platform and choose one. You can search by name, kind or shape: reels, shorts, 4:5, india. The preview shows that app's interface and safe zone.
- Read the line under the picker. If the platform and the sequence differ in shape, it says so, dims the part a crop to that shape would lose, and suggests the sequence size to make.
- Tick Interface, Safe zone, Centre lines, Rule of thirds or Grid. Interface opacity starts at 70%.
- Press Show it on my video to preview the guides on the frame at your playhead.
- Press Apply. mouzeclick adds one clip named "⚠ GUIDES (mouzeclick)", with a Magenta label, on a track of its own above everything.
Replace swaps the guides for another platform, Show / Hide switches them off and on, and Remove takes them off the sequence. Show / Hide is also a tool on the mouzeclick Toolbar and can go on a mouse button or a wheel, so you can flick the guides on while you place a title and off again to judge the shot. Guides is one of five tabs in mouzeclick Studio, next to the other Premiere Pro tools.
Which platforms do the 65 safe zone presets cover?
Sixty-five presets in 8 groups: vertical short video, stories, India, China and East Asia, more regions, feeds, widescreen players, and broadcast and cinema frames.
| Group | Presets | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Short video | 12 | TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, Snapchat Spotlight, Pinterest, LinkedIn and X vertical video, Threads, Triller, Clapper, Rumble Shorts |
| Stories | 7 | Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Telegram and Messenger Stories, WhatsApp Status, YouTube vertical in the app feed |
| India | 6 | Moj, Josh, Chingari, Roposo, ShareChat video, YouTube Shorts (India) |
| China and East Asia | 10 | Douyin, Kuaishou, WeChat Channels, Bilibili, Weibo, Xiaohongshu / RED (3:4 and 9:16), LINE VOOM, Naver Clip, Kakao |
| More regions | 6 | Kwai, Likee, Snack Video, VK Clips, Lemon8, Zalo |
| Feed | 9 | Instagram and Facebook 4:5 and 1:1, LinkedIn 1:1, Threads 4:5, Pinterest 2:3, Reddit 4:5, Tumblr 1:1 |
| Widescreen | 10 | YouTube, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Vimeo, Twitch, Kick, Rumble, Dailymotion, Bilibili |
| Broadcast and cinema | 5 | Title safe 90% and action safe 93% for TV, a 4:3 centre cut, cinema 2.39:1 and 1.85:1 |
The big apps get a drawing of their own interface. Many regional presets share a general short-video layout with their own margins, so check those against a test post and nudge the margins if the app has moved its buttons.
Do hidden safe zone guides end up in my export?
No. Show / Hide switches the guide clip off, and a switched-off clip is not exported. Guides that are showing would be exported like any other clip, which is why the Guides tab warns you while they show.
- Showing: a red warning says to hide or remove them before you export.
- Hidden: an amber note says they are on the sequence but switched off, so not exported, and reminds you to remove them when you are done.
- On other sequences: if guides sit on other sequences in the project, the tab tells you, so you can remove them before you export those.
Your footage is never moved or changed; the guides live on their own track. Press Remove before you hand a project to another editor or a colourist: to them the guide clip is just a picture on the top track, and they won't see mouzeclick's warning. Remove from all sequences clears every sequence in the project at once.
How do I keep captions inside the safe zone?
Put the guide on first, then place the captions where the guide shows clear frame. With the TikTok preset, that means above the bottom 484 px of a 1080 × 1920 frame and clear of the button column on the right.
- Apply the guide for the platform you post to most. If one cut goes to TikTok, Reels and Shorts, respect the strictest edge of each: in these presets Reels is strictest at the top, bottom and left, TikTok on the right.
- Make the captions. mouzeclick's auto captions go on Premiere's caption track or styled on the video, and Hinglish captions work the same way.
- Move the captions up until the safe zone clears them, and check a frame with your longest line, not your shortest.
- Hide the guides, then export.
Turn on Centre lines and Rule of thirds when you frame a face. The grid, up to 24 rows and 24 columns with a margin and gutter, helps when you lay out text and product shots.
Can I make my own safe zone presets?
Yes. Change the margins (top, bottom, left and right, as a percentage of the frame), the grid and the guide colour, then name the setup and press Save; it appears under My presets. Platform's own puts a preset's original margins back, and Export and Import share presets as files, so a whole team can work to the same margins.
That helps with a client who has their own rules, say a brand that wants nothing within 10% of any edge, or with an app that moved its buttons last week.
Are there safe zone guides for After Effects too?
Yes, inside mouzeresize, one of the 15 After Effects extensions in mouzeclick. It makes resized copies of a comp in formats such as 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 and 16:9, keeps pinned layers inside a safe area (a 5% margin, title safe 10%, a rough vertical app interface or your own margins), and can add a safe-area guide layer if you want one. For reframes in Premiere, mouzsplit builds a new 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 frame as a real sequence.
Do the safe zone guides work on Mac?
Yes. The Studio's Guides tab works on Windows and on macOS 12 or newer, with the same licence key. In the Studio, captions and Retakes are Windows only for now. The Mac install guide covers the four steps.
See where the app's buttons land before you export. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.
Questions people ask
What is the TikTok safe zone in pixels?
In mouzeclick's TikTok preset at 1080 × 1920: 130 px at the top, 484 px at the bottom, 140 px on the right and 44 px on the left. Other templates use their own numbers, and TikTok changes its layout from time to time, so treat any figure as a starting point and check one private upload before a campaign goes out.
Are the Instagram Reels and TikTok safe zones the same?
No. In mouzeclick's presets, Reels keeps 14% of the height clear at the top and 35% at the bottom, against 6.8% and 25.2% for TikTok. TikTok needs more room on the right, 13% against 6%. If one cut goes to both apps, keep the captions inside both zones.
What is the difference between title safe and action safe?
Both come from TV, where sets used to crop the edges of the picture. Action safe marks where important action should stay; title safe is a tighter box for text. mouzeclick's broadcast presets use title safe 90% and action safe 93% of the frame. For phone apps, the app's own buttons matter far more than either box.
Do the guides change my footage or sequence settings?
No. The guides are one clip on a track of their own above your video. Nothing under them is moved or changed, and the sequence settings stay as they are. Remove takes the guide clip off again whenever you are done.
Can I use a 9:16 guide on a 16:9 sequence?
Yes. The Guides tab compares the preset with your sequence and, when the shapes differ, dims the part a 9:16 crop would lose. That is useful when you cut a horizontal master and plan a vertical version later. For the vertical edit itself, make a sequence in the right shape; the tab suggests the size.
Why can't Premiere just hide a layer at export?
Premiere has no layer type that shows in the Program Monitor but stays out of the render: every enabled clip on a track with its output on is exported. That is why overlay templates need switching off by hand, and why mouzeclick's guides come with a Show / Hide button and a warning while they show.
Can I put Show / Hide guides on a mouse button?
Yes. In mouzeclick, Show / Hide guides is an action you can put on a mouse button or a wheel, and it is also a tool on the mouzeclick Toolbar in Premiere. Flick the guides on to place a title, flick them off to judge the shot.
Do the safe zone guides cost extra?
No. They are part of mouzeclick Studio, which comes with the one plan with everything included: $25 a month, $249 for a year or $499 for a lifetime key. Try it free for 3 days with no card. See the plan, or everything that comes with it on the store page.
