Reddit round-up

The free After Effects plugins Reddit recommends, and which aren't free

Updated 2026-10-31 · by the mouzeclick team · Also in Español, Português (Brasil), Bahasa Indonesia

Across 13 r/AfterEffects threads from February 2024 to July 2026, Reddit's favourite free After Effects plugin is Video Copilot's FX Console: 11 threads, 37 mentions. Duik, Mover, Void and Saber are the other truly free picks. EaseCopy (8 threads) is name-your-own-price, not free, and the advice beginners get most often is to learn After Effects first.

  • 13 r/AfterEffects threads and 349 comments read, February 2024 to July 2026
  • FX Console: 11 threads, 37 mentions, the top comment score (250)
  • Commenters say EaseCopy, Rift and Matchrate are name-your-own-price; Motion Tools Pro 2025 costs $40
  • No thread mentions mouzeclick, which we make and which isn't free

How did we find Reddit's free After Effects plugin picks?

We read 13 r/AfterEffects threads from February 2024 to July 2026, 349 comments in all: every free-plugin question thread the searches found with 11 or more comments (eight of them), two well-commented threads where developers released free tools, and three that ask for free or low-cost tools together. A script counted every post or comment that names a tool, once per comment, and added up the votes on those comments.

The threads came from title searches for "free plugins", "free plugin", "free scripts", "best plugins" and "plugins" in the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit posts, read on 31 October 2026. The r/MotionDesign "free plugins" search timed out, and its "plugins" search had no free-plugin thread with more than five comments.

One warning before the numbers: in "free plugin" threads, people often recommend tools that are paid or name-your-own-price. The count measures mentions, not price, so the table says what commenters call each tool's price and the next section sorts out what's really free.

We aren't affiliated with Reddit or with any tool here. We make mouzeclick, which isn't free and isn't mentioned in any of the 13 threads; our view is in its own labelled section. Opinions are paraphrased and linked to their comments, and every thread is under Sources.

Which free After Effects plugins does Reddit recommend most?

FX Console, in 11 of the 13 threads, with 37 mentions and the highest comment score (250). EaseCopy comes second, though it's name-your-own-price rather than free. The top 15, by threads and then mentions:

ToolPrice, as commenters describe itThreads (of 13)MentionsComment score

"Comment score" adds up the votes on comments that name a tool. Just below the cut sit Ease and Wizz and Saber (3 threads, 5 mentions each), TextEvo and Matchrate. KBar, Flow, Motion Studio and Overlord are paid; they appear because people list the tools they use every day. Most of the list are scripts and panels rather than plugins in the strict sense, which our plugin vs script vs extension explainer untangles.

Which of Reddit's "free" After Effects plugins are actually free?

Fewer than the threads suggest: of the top 15, only FX Console, Duik, Mover, Void and Beatgrid are plainly free. Sorted by what commenters say, checked against the makers' pages where we have them:

  • Free: FX Console, Saber, Orb, Duik, Void, Mover, Beatgrid. Video Copilot's page says FX Console is free, and RxLaboratorio publishes Duik as free and open source (GPL-v3), with a donation requested but optional.
  • Name-your-own-price: EaseCopy, Rift, Matchrate, TextEvo and Trim Paths.
  • Unclear: True Comp Duplicator is name-your-own-price to one commenter and not free any more to another. Check its store page before you count on it.
  • Free tier, paid upgrade: MoBar and Animation Composer. Mister Horse's free plan has over 1,000 assets and four tools, with commercial use allowed; the paid plan is $19.90 a month or $198 a year.
  • Now paid: Motion Tools Pro. In 2024 a commenter called it a free take on Mt. Mograph's Motion, and in 2025 another pointed to Motion Design School's Motion Tools as a decent free equivalent of Motion 4. But the school's page showed Motion Tools Pro 2025 at $40 on 31 October 2026, with a 14-day refund, and aescripts shows a free trial.

Is FX Console still the best free After Effects plugin, according to Reddit?

Yes, though After Effects has caught up. It was the most-upvoted answer, 48 points, in the "makes life easier" thread, and a June 2026 reply is blunter: "FX Console is the goat free plugin" (r/AfterEffects, June 2026).

From Video Copilot's page: free, with Windows and Mac downloads; version 1.0.7 adds language support for After Effects 2026.

Which other free tools come up most?

Duik for rigging, Mover for staggering, plus Void and Video Copilot's free effects.

Are EaseCopy and True Comp Duplicator free?

Not quite. Both are name-your-own-price: you choose what to pay, and Reddit has opinions about people who choose nothing.

More on these scripts in our After Effects scripts Reddit round-up.

Are Animation Composer's and MoBar's free tiers worth it?

For presets and a taste of a toolbar, yes; just know where the limits are.

What happened to the free script toolboxes of 2026?

Two developers released big free script collections in mid-2026. One stayed free; the other started charging, and Reddit noticed.

What does Reddit tell beginners to do before installing free plugins?

Learn After Effects first. Beginner threads keep putting that answer near the top: a 35-point reply in 2024, the top reply later that year and the top reply in 2026. A free plugin can't help with an effect whose name you don't know yet.

  1. Learn the native tools. After Effects' own Quick Apply already covers the basic search that made FX Console famous.
  2. Check you're in the right app. That 35-point reply opens by saying After Effects isn't an editing app, so if you mainly cut video, look at Premiere Pro tools instead.
  3. Install one free tool at a time, starting with FX Console, and add Duik only if you animate characters.
  4. Don't ask for paid plugins free. Those requests get a no-piracy reply pointing out that After Effects and plugin developers read the subreddit.

When you're ready to pay for something, our After Effects plugins Reddit round-up covers the paid favourites, and the best After Effects extensions list sorts tools by job, with prices.

Where mouzeclick fits (our view)

This section is ours, not Reddit's: none of the 13 threads or 349 comments mentions mouzeclick. And it isn't free. There's no free tier, only a 3-day trial with no card, then one plan at $25 a month, $249 a year, or $499 once for one of the first 100 lifetime keys, which works for as long as mouzeclick runs. If you only want free tools, start with the list above.

Where it overlaps with Reddit's free picks, once you're ready to pay:

  • Like FX Console: Search effects finds an effect as you type, and Shift+Enter pins it to the After Effects Tool wheel, 114 tools in 13 groups on any mouse. Windows and Mac.
  • Like Motion Tools Pro: mouzekit has 28 After Effects tools in seven groups, one undo step each, and mouzerun turns a script, expression, preset, menu command or ease into a one-click button. Both are among the 15 After Effects extensions. Windows and Mac.
  • Like the 2026 script toolboxes: the mouzeclick workspace puts a Toolbox, 159 text presets in Type studio, an Easing lab and a batch Rename tab in one After Effects panel. Windows only.

The limits: the workspace is Windows only; the extensions, Search effects and Tool wheel also run on macOS 12 or newer (Mac guide). The app needs an internet connection while it runs. The all-in-one After Effects extension guide walks through every section, and plans are in the pricing section.

Start with the free tools; try mouzeclick for 3 days when a chore keeps coming back. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.

Questions people ask

What is the best free After Effects plugin according to Reddit?FX Console from Video Copilot. It's named in 11 of the 13 threads we read, 37 times, with the highest comment score of any tool. It opens a search box on a shortcut so you can apply any effect by typing its name. After Effects' own Quick Apply now does part of that, but FX Console adds extras such as a snapshot tool, and it still costs nothing.
What does name-your-own-price (NYOP) mean for After Effects scripts? You choose what to pay. EaseCopy, Rift, Matchrate and TextEvo are sold that way, which is why they keep appearing in free-plugin threads. Commenters push back on calling them free: one says anyone who takes them for nothing is a leech. EaseCopy's own developer says the price was weighed against a similar free tool, and that it doubles as a calling card for their paid tools.
Is there a free After Effects plugin for Mac?Yes. Someone asked exactly this in a July 2026 beginners' thread. FX Console has Windows and Mac downloads on Video Copilot's page, and Duik runs on Windows and Mac according to its maker, RxLaboratorio, for After Effects 2021 or newer. Mister Horse also offers Mac and Windows downloads of Animation Composer, which has a free plan and needs After Effects 2025 or newer.
Is Motion Tools Pro still free? Not the current version. Reddit commenters in 2024 and 2025 called Motion Design School's Motion Tools a free alternative to Mt. Mograph's Motion, but Motion Design School's page showed Motion Tools Pro 2025 at $40 on 31 October 2026, with a 14-day refund. aescripts sells it for $40.00 too and shows a free trial button, so you can test it before paying.
Why do developers give After Effects plugins away for free, according to Reddit?A November 2025 thread asked exactly that. The answers: to build an email list, as a funnel to paid tools, because some developers are simply generous, and because writing scripts with AI help now lets more people share small tools. EaseCopy's developer joined in to say the name-your-own-price script works as a calling card for the tools they sell.
Can I ask r/AfterEffects for paid plugins for free? No. Requests for paid plugins at no cost get a no-piracy reply. If money is tight, the free tools above cover a lot: FX Console, Duik, Saber, Void and Mover. Name-your-own-price scripts let you pay what you can, and many paid tools on aescripts, including Flow and KBar, show a free trial before you buy.
Which free plugin should an After Effects beginner install first?FX Console, once you know your way around plain After Effects. Commenters warn that it can't help if you don't know effect names yet, and the built-in Quick Apply covers the basics. Add Duik if you animate characters. For ready-made presets, Animation Composer's free plan has over 1,000 assets with commercial use allowed, per Mister Horse's pricing page.
Does Reddit recommend mouzeclick? No. None of the 13 threads or 349 comments we read mentions it, and neither does any search result we saved. We make mouzeclick, so it appears here in a section labelled as our view. It also isn't free: there's a 3-day trial with no card, then a paid plan, so it doesn't belong in a free list.
