Reddit round-up

The After Effects scripts Reddit recommends, and the ones it argues about

Updated 2026-10-31 · by the mouzeclick team · Also in Español, Português (Brasil), Bahasa Indonesia

Across 13 r/AfterEffects threads from March 2024 to August 2026, Reddit's most-recommended After Effects scripts are True Comp Duplicator (7 threads, 23 mentions) and EaseCopy (6 threads, 31 mentions and the top comment score). Flow and KBar follow as script panels, with Duik for rigging. The buying advice from the sale threads: pay only for jobs After Effects can't already do, and trial first.

  • 13 r/AfterEffects threads and 409 comments read, March 2024 to August 2026
  • True Comp Duplicator: most threads (7); EaseCopy: most mentions (31) and comment score (220)
  • Only one 2024-2026 thread title asks for "best scripts" on its own
  • No thread mentions mouzeclick. We make it, and our view is labelled as ours

How did we count Reddit's After Effects script recommendations?

We read 13 r/AfterEffects threads from March 2024 to August 2026, 409 comments in all, and counted every post or comment that names a tool, once per comment, with the votes on those comments added up. Reddit rarely asks for "best scripts" on its own: only one title since 2024 does, and it's about getting AI to write them. So most of these recommendations come from threads that ask about scripts and plugins together, plus aescripts sale threads and two free script releases.

The threads came from title searches in the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit posts, read on 31 October 2026: "scripts" (85 posts, every title with the word since 2024), "aescripts" (37), "free scripts" (15), and "best plugins" and "plugins" for the mixed threads. The singular "script" search timed out. r/MotionDesign had 8 "scripts" posts, none with more than five comments.

We aren't affiliated with Reddit or with any tool here. We make mouzeclick, which has After Effects panels; none of the 13 threads mentions it, so our view is in its own labelled section. Opinions are paraphrased and linked to their comments, and every thread is under Sources.

Which After Effects scripts does Reddit recommend most?

True Comp Duplicator appears in the most threads (7 of 13) and EaseCopy gets the most mentions (31) and the highest comment score (220). This list leaves out effect plugins: FX Console, a plugin, would otherwise sit third with 26 mentions. The top 15 scripts and script panels, by threads and then mentions:

Only six of these are plain .jsx scripts: True Comp Duplicator, EaseCopy, Duik, Explode Shape Layers, AE Global Renamer and TextEvo. Rift, QuickMenu 3, AutoCrop, Jump Keyframe, Matchrate, MarkerMaestro and Beatgrid also come up. The rest are panels that people call scripts, and KBar and MoBar exist to launch your other scripts. Commenters correct each other on this often, and our plugin vs script vs extension explainer has the file types.

Is True Comp Duplicator worth it, according to Reddit?

If you make versions of the same animation, yes. True Comp Duplicator makes independent copies of a comp, so you can change one without touching the other.

For a single precomp you want to change on its own, After Effects' own route is to duplicate it in the Project panel and swap the copy in, which our precompose guide walks through.

EaseCopy or Flow: what's the difference?

EaseCopy copies an ease you already made and pastes it onto other keyframes; Flow is a curve editor where you shape eases and keep a library of them. People ask how they differ, because both copy and paste eases.

Our easing presets guide shows the graph editor route next to Flow.

Do you need KBar or MoBar to run your scripts?

Not to run them, but to reach them fast. Both put buttons on screen for the scripts, presets and actions you already own.

Our KBar comparison sets it against mouzeclick's buttons and Tool wheel.

Which smaller After Effects scripts do people name?

A handful of one-job scripts turn up across several threads:

What does Reddit say about buying scripts on aescripts?

Buy little, and trial first. The clearest advice in the Black Friday thread: "Only what you need or can't do natively in AE." (r/AfterEffects, November 2025)

Is using scripts in After Effects cheating?

No, replies say, in March 2026 and a month earlier. The practical catches are at work, not in your skills:

So learn the native way for each job a script does, and you can work on any machine.

Are people writing their own After Effects scripts now?

Yes, and it's a growing theme in these threads. Commenters use ChatGPT for one-off tools, have AI write small utilities such as timeline extenders, and one says they now use Claude to write plugins. The only "best scripts" title since 2024 asks about exactly this.

Free collections arrived too:

  • mograph.life put 32 MIT-licensed scripts online with a page that bundles your picks into one toolbar. A few errored in After Effects 25 and 26 at launch, and the author shipped fixes.
  • AE Workflow Optimizer launched free with 70+ tools in June 2026 and came back as a $19.99 toolbox in August, to a cold reception.

Where mouzeclick fits (our view)

This section is ours, not Reddit's: none of the 13 threads or 409 comments mentions mouzeclick. It isn't a .jsx script; it's an app with After Effects panels, and it overlaps with some of these jobs.

  • Like KBar: mouzerun makes one-click buttons from a script, expression, preset, menu command or ease, and the After Effects Tool wheel puts 114 tools in 13 groups on any mouse. Windows and Mac.
  • Like an expressions script: mouzeexpr has 24 ready-made expressions with settings, and Bake turns them into keyframes. Windows and Mac. See the expressions library guide.
  • Like AE Global Renamer and the duplicators: the mouzeclick workspace has a Rename tab with find and replace and a preview, True dup for an unlinked copy of a precomp, Precomp sep, Un-precomp and a Text exploder for characters, words or lines. Windows only.

What it doesn't replace: Duik's character rigging, or the scripts you already own, though mouzerun can put those on a button.

The limits: no free tier, just a 3-day trial with no card, then one plan at $25 a month, $249 a year, or $499 once for one of the first 100 lifetime keys, which works for as long as mouzeclick runs. The workspace is Windows only; the extensions also run on macOS 12 or newer. The app must be running, with an internet connection, while you use its panels, and like the scripts above it's an install that a locked-down work machine may block. Plans are in the pricing section.

Try mouzeclick's After Effects panels for 3 days, no card needed. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.

Questions people ask

What is the best After Effects script according to Reddit?True Comp Duplicator and EaseCopy. True Comp Duplicator appears in the most threads (7 of 13) for making independent copies of comps; EaseCopy has the most mentions (31) and the highest comment score (220) for copying eases between keyframes. Duik is the free favourite for rigging. KBar and MoBar rank high too, but they're launchers for your other scripts rather than scripts that do a job.
What's the difference between a script, a plugin and an extension in After Effects?A script is a .jsx file that runs After Effects' own commands, from File › Scripts or as a docked panel. A plugin is compiled code, such as an .aex file on Windows, that adds effects and must be installed on every machine that renders. An extension is an HTML panel opened from Window › Extensions. Reddit uses "plugin" for all three; our explainer has the details.
How do I install an After Effects script?Duik's install guide shows the usual three routes for a .jsx panel: copy it into After Effects' ScriptUI Panels folder and open it from the Window menu, install it through File › Scripts, or run it once without installing. Its guide also says to tick "Allow Scripts to Write Files and Access Network" in the preferences. Paid tools often come with their own installer instead.
Will using scripts make me less hireable at a studio, according to Reddit? Not in itself. Most replies say scripts aren't cheating. The risk is practical: a studio may not buy your scripts or let you install them, and projects with dependencies are harder to hand to clients. One commenter prefers scripts that don't break a project when they're removed, and knowing the native way to do each job means you can work on any machine.
Is aescripts the only place to buy After Effects scripts? No, but it's the default. After licence registration outages in late 2025, one Reddit thread asked developers to sell elsewhere too; a developer who also sells on Plugin Play, Gumroad and Adobe's own marketplace replied that aescripts still brings in far more sales. Some tools are sold directly as well: Motion Design School sells Motion Tools Pro for $40 on its own site, and Battle Axe sells Overlord from battleaxe.co.
Can ChatGPT or Claude write After Effects scripts?Redditors say they use both for small, one-off tools, such as extending a timeline, and one says they now write their own plugins that way. The only "best scripts" title in r/AfterEffects since 2024 is about this. Expect to test and debug what you get; the commenter who uses Claude says the results need some fixing at first.
Which After Effects scripts should I buy in a sale?Only ones for a job you repeat, and only after a trial. In the Black Friday thread, the clearest advice was to buy only what you need or can't do natively, and one buyer admitted to expensive tools used once. Flow and KBar both show free trials on aescripts. Write down the chores that eat your week before the sale and shop against that list.
Does Reddit recommend mouzeclick? No. None of the 13 threads or 409 comments we read mentions it, and neither does any search result we saved. We make mouzeclick, so it's on this page in a section labelled as our view, with its limits. It isn't a script either: it's an app with After Effects panels, with a 3-day trial and no card.
