After Effects plugins, scripts and extensions: what each one is

Updated 2026-10-31 · by the mouzeclick team · Also in Español, Português (Brasil), Bahasa Indonesia

A plugin is compiled code (.aex on Windows, .plugin on a Mac) that adds effects to the Effect menu. A script (.jsx or .jsxbin) is ExtendScript that automates After Effects from File › Scripts or as a docked ScriptUI panel. An extension is an HTML panel, usually shipped as a .zxp, that opens from Window › Extensions.

  • Plugins go in the Plug-ins folder and are needed on every machine that renders
  • Scripts leave plain layers and expressions behind, so nobody needs them to render
  • Extensions install to the CEP extensions folder, most easily with the maker's own installer
  • Animation presets (.ffx) and MOGRTs are none of the three

What is the difference between an After Effects plugin, script and extension?

The difference is what the file is and how After Effects runs it. A plugin is compiled code that adds new effects. A script is ExtendScript code that drives commands After Effects already has. An extension is a panel built with web technology that usually sends scripts to After Effects behind its buttons.

Two things people lump in with these are neither. An animation preset (.ffx) is saved effect and keyframe settings. A Motion Graphics template (.mogrt) is an editable graphic for Premiere Pro's Essential Graphics. Both are files you apply, not code you install.

What is an After Effects plugin?

A plugin is a compiled program, written in C or C++ against Adobe's SDK, that After Effects loads at start-up and runs every time it renders a frame. That's why effect plugins such as Trapcode Suite, Element 3D or Saber can make pixels After Effects can't make on its own.

On Windows a plugin is an .aex file; on a Mac it's a .plugin bundle. Most come with an installer, which puts them in one of these places:

  • After Effects only (Windows): C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects 2026\Support Files\Plug-ins
  • After Effects only (macOS): /Applications/Adobe After Effects 2026/Plug-ins
  • Shared with Premiere Pro: the MediaCore folder, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore on Windows, or /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore on a Mac

Restart After Effects and the effect appears in the Effect menu and the Effects & Presets panel. Not every plugin makes effects: Video Copilot's free FX Console is a plug-in that searches effects and presets from one shortcut and saves PNG snapshots.

The catch with effect plugins is render time. Every machine that opens or renders the project needs the plugin installed and licensed, or the layer shows a missing-effect warning. If you hand projects to other editors, agree on the plugin list before you start.

What is an After Effects script, and what is a .jsxbin file?

A script is a text file of ExtendScript, Adobe's older dialect of JavaScript, that tells After Effects to do things it can already do: make layers, set keyframes, rename, precompose, add expressions. A .jsx file is readable source. A .jsxbin is the same code binary-encoded, so the author can ship it without showing the source; it runs the same way and you can't edit it.

There are three ways to run one:

  1. Once: File › Scripts › Run Script File, then pick the file.
  2. From the menu: put it in the Scripts folder inside the After Effects program folder (Support Files\Scripts on Windows), restart, and it is listed under File › Scripts.
  3. As a dockable panel: ScriptUI panels go in Scripts/ScriptUI Panels, or use File › Scripts › Install ScriptUI Panel. After a restart they appear at the bottom of the Window menu.

Many scripts save files or go online, which needs "Allow Scripts to Write Files and Access Network" ticked in the Scripting & Expressions section of After Effects' preferences. Duik Ángela's install guide asks for exactly this. Duik is a good example of how far scripts go: a full rigging toolkit (bones, IK, walk cycles) as one free .jsx panel you can even run without installing.

The good news about scripts is what they leave behind. Once a script has run, the result is ordinary layers, keyframes and expressions, so nobody needs the script to open or render your project.

What is an After Effects extension (a CEP panel or ZXP)?

An extension is a panel built in HTML, CSS and JavaScript that runs inside After Effects on Adobe's Common Extensibility Platform (CEP). It draws its own interface, so it can show previews, search boxes, libraries and sign-ins, and it sends ExtendScript to After Effects to do the actual work. You open it from Window › Extensions and dock it like any panel.

Extensions are usually shipped as a .zxp: a signed ZIP archive of the extension folder. Adobe's CEP 12 documentation gives these install folders:

  • Windows, for one user: C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CEP\extensions
  • Windows, for everyone: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\CEP\extensions
  • macOS, for one user: ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions
  • macOS, for everyone: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions

Adobe also has a newer panel system, UXP. A July 2026 bug report on Adobe Community shows recent After Effects builds labelling this menu Window › Extensions (Legacy). Motion Bro's panel and mouzeclick's panels are CEP extensions and open from it.

When do you need an After Effects plugin, a script or an extension?

Match the file type to the problem. If After Effects can't make the look at all, you need a plugin. If it can but it takes 20 clicks every time, a script fixes that. If you want a tool open all day with previews and search, that's an extension or a ScriptUI panel.

  • A new look (volumetric light, particles, real 3D text): a plugin.
  • A chore you repeat (renaming 60 layers, one precomp per layer, un-precomposing): a script or a panel that runs one. Our guides to batch renaming layers and un-precomposing show both the manual and the scripted route.
  • A library you browse (text presets, transitions, templates): a panel. Motion Bro ships its free panel as a ZXP; see the Motion Bro comparison.
  • Buttons for scripts you already own: a launcher such as KBar ($39.99 once on aescripts; our KBar comparison covers it), or a panel that builds buttons for you.
  • Your own saved look: no install at all. Save it as an animation preset and apply it with Animation › Apply Animation Preset.

Most editors end up with one or two good extensions plus the handful of effect plugins your clients' templates already use. Our roundup of the best After Effects extensions sorts the panels by job.

How do you install a ZXP extension in After Effects?

Use the maker's own installer if there is one; otherwise use a ZXP installer app, and only fall back to copying files by hand. In order:

  1. Quit After Effects. Extensions are read at start-up.
  2. Check for the maker's installer. Most big names have one: Motion Bro installs through the Creative Cloud desktop app, Mister Horse uses its Product Manager, AEJuice its Pack Manager, and Mt. Mograph's installer finds your Adobe apps by itself. mouzeclick installs and updates its own panels.
  3. No installer? Open the .zxp with a ZXP installer app, such as the ZXP/UXP Installer that Motion Bro's help page names.
  4. Manual route: rename a copy of the .zxp to .zip, extract it, and put the extension's folder (the one holding a CSXS folder with manifest.xml) straight inside the per-user CEP extensions folder listed above. Don't nest it one folder deeper.
  5. Start After Effects and open Window › Extensions › the panel's name.

Why is my extension not showing under Window › Extensions?

Usually because After Effects was open during the install, the folder ended up in the wrong place, or the extension doesn't list your After Effects version. Work down this list:

  • Restart properly. Quit After Effects completely, then open it again.
  • Check the folder. The extension's folder must sit directly inside CEP/extensions, with CSXS/manifest.xml one level down.
  • Check the version. Every extension's manifest names the host apps and version range it supports. An extension built for older releases can be skipped by a new one. Look for an update from the maker before anything else.
  • Look under Extensions (Legacy). Some recent builds use that label. On 15 July 2026 a user filed an Adobe Community bug report saying newly installed CEP extensions did not appear there in After Effects 26.3, 26.2.1 and 25.6.5, with the error "Unsupported Manifest version". It had no Adobe reply when we checked, so treat it as one user's report.
  • Unsigned builds need debug mode. A developer's unsigned test build only loads with PlayerDebugMode set to 1: on Windows a string value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\CSXS.12, on a Mac defaults write com.adobe.CSXS.12 PlayerDebugMode 1. The 12 is the CEP version. A store-bought extension shouldn't need this.
  • Some panels need their app. mouzeclick's panels need mouzeclick running, and the mouzeclick workspace only exists on Windows.

A greyed-out Window › Extensions menu usually means After Effects found no extension it could load at all.

Where does mouzeclick fit: plugin, script or extension?

mouzeclick is a desktop app with a set of extensions it installs into After Effects for you. The app (Windows and Mac) puts tools on your mouse buttons and wheels. Inside After Effects it adds, all under Window › Extensions:

  • The mouzeclick bridge panel, which lets the Tool wheel run its 114 After Effects tools inside the app. More on the After Effects radial menu.
  • Search effects, to find and apply any installed effect by typing.
  • 15 After Effects extensions, from mouzekit's 28 tools to mousecut's editor timeline, listed on the extensions page.
  • The mouzeclick workspace (Windows only), one panel with 11 sections, covered in our all-in-one After Effects extension guide and on the workspace page.

It isn't an effect plugin, and there's no .zxp to install: press Install After Effects bridge on the Tool wheel page, restart After Effects, and the panels are there. Most of its tools leave native layers, keyframes, text animators and expressions behind; mouzmic, for one, builds its looks from After Effects' own Calculations, Glow and Noise effects. It also runs your scripts: mouzerun makes one-click buttons for a script, expression, preset, menu command or ease.

Questions people ask

Is a .ffx animation preset a plugin?

No. An .ffx file is saved effect and keyframe settings, not code. Apply it with Animation › Apply Animation Preset or from the Effects & Presets panel. It only works if every effect inside it is installed, so a preset built on a third-party plugin still needs that plugin on your machine.

Can I edit a .jsxbin script?

No. A .jsxbin is ExtendScript that has been binary-encoded so the author can ship it without the readable source. After Effects runs it exactly like a .jsx, but you can't open it in a text editor and change it. If you need to adjust a script, ask the maker for options or settings rather than trying to decode it.

Do After Effects plugins also work in Premiere Pro?

Some do. Effect plugins that support both apps usually install into the shared MediaCore folder, and the maker's page lists both hosts. Panels state their hosts too: Motion Bro needs After Effects 2021+ or Premiere Pro 2022+, and Animation Composer needs 2025 or newer in either. Never assume it; check the host list before you buy.

Do I need admin rights to install plugins and extensions?

For plugins, usually yes: the Plug-ins folder sits under Program Files on Windows and inside Applications on a Mac, and both need an administrator to write there. Extensions can go in the per-user CEP folder in your own AppData or Library folder, which doesn't need admin rights. Studio machines with locked accounts often only allow the per-user route.

Are free After Effects scripts and extensions safe to install?

Usually, if they come from the maker's own page or a known store, never a re-upload. The code runs with your own user rights, and a script allowed to write files and access the network can do both, so be wary of anything that asks for admin rights it doesn't need. Free and open source tools such as Duik Ángela publish their licence (GPL-v3) and their source.

Do I need a plugin installed to render someone else's project?

For an effect plugin, yes: every machine that renders needs it. For a script, no, because the result is plain After Effects layers and expressions. Extensions vary. Mister Horse says its plugins aren't needed for rendering, and Motion Bro says projects with its presets work without the plugin.

Will my extensions still work in After Effects 2026?

Maintained ones do, and their makers say so: aescripts lists KBar3 and Motion Tools Pro for After Effects 2022 to 2026, and Flow for 2020 to 2026. If an older panel stops loading after an update, check for a new version before anything else, then work through the missing-extension checklist above.
