How to split text into separate letters in After Effects
After Effects has no built-in command that splits a text layer into one layer per letter. By hand, you duplicate the layer once per letter and mask a different letter on each copy, or you skip splitting and animate per character with a text animator. In the mouzeclick workspace on Windows, Text exploder puts characters, words, lines or paragraphs on their own layers, each where it was.
- A text animator moves each character, word or line in turn without splitting, and the text stays editable in one place.
- Duplicate-and-mask works in every version, but leaves the whole word on every layer.
- Text exploder in the mouzeclick workspace splits by characters, words, lines or paragraphs; Separate text makes two balanced lines.
- The workspace is Windows only. On a Mac, use the native methods.
Do you need one layer per letter in After Effects?
Often you don't. A text animator moves, scales, rotates or fades each character in turn while the text stays one layer, so you can still fix a typo in one place. Add one from the Animate menu on the text layer (or Animation › Animate Text), then use its Range Selector to sweep through the letters. Under Advanced, Based On switches between characters, characters excluding spaces, words and lines.
Split the text when each piece needs something a text animator can't give it:
- its own motion path, parent or physics, such as letters falling and bouncing off each other;
- its own effect, mask or blending mode;
- hand-placed keyframes on one letter that the others don't share;
- real 3D per letter, with each one turning around its own anchor.
If it's a stagger, a typewriter or a pop-in you're after, a preset is faster than splitting. The workspace's Type studio has 159 presets, 54 of them staggers that run in five orders (first to last, last to first, from the centre out, from the edges in, or random), with a hover preview before you apply. See text animation presets for After Effects.
How do I split text into letters manually in After Effects?
Duplicate the layer once per letter, then mask a different letter on each copy. It works in any version and keeps every letter exactly where it was.
- Finish the text first. Font, size, tracking and colour. Every copy will hold the whole word, so a change later means changing every layer.
- Duplicate. Select the layer and press Ctrl+D (Cmd+D on a Mac) until you have one copy per letter: six for a six-letter word.
- Mask one letter per copy. Select a copy, pick the Rectangle tool (Q) and draw a mask around one letter. Leave room for descenders and for italic letters that lean into their neighbours.
- Rename each layer after its letter: select it, press Enter (Return on a Mac), type. On a long word, a batch rename with numbering is quicker.
- Move each anchor point onto its letter with the Pan Behind tool (Y). Skip this and every letter rotates and scales around the same point, the anchor of the full word. The anchor point guide covers the quicker ways.
Why masks and not deleting letters? Delete the other letters from a copy and the one that's left moves, because the line re-flows around what remains. A mask leaves the layout alone.
The vector route is the other option. Right-click the text layer and choose Create › Create Shapes from Text: you get a shape layer with one group per character, already outlined, which suits morphs and stroke animation. The text is no longer editable, and the groups are still in one layer.
How does Text exploder split text in one press?
Select a text layer, open Toolbox in the mouzeclick workspace for After Effects and choose a unit in Text exploder: characters, words, lines or paragraphs. Each piece lands on its own layer, placed where it was in the original, so nothing jumps.
The fifth option, Separate text, does a different job: it splits a text layer's words into two stacked lines of balanced length. That's the one for a long title that runs off a 9:16 frame, where you'd otherwise hunt for the right word to break on.
Two things to do around a split:
- Keep the original. Duplicate the text layer and switch the copy off before you split, so a wording change later doesn't mean starting again.
- Set the anchors. The anchor grid in the same Toolbox sends an anchor to any of nine spots (corners, edge midpoints or the centre) without moving the layer.
The workspace is Windows only; the Mac app does not include it. Since 0.58.40 it comes with every mouzeclick licence on Windows, at no extra cost.
Should I split text by characters, words or lines?
Split by the largest unit that still moves on its own. Every extra layer is more to keyframe and more to keep tidy.
| Split by | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Characters | Letter drops, scatters, physics, per-letter 3D | A 30-letter headline gives you about 30 layers; anchors matter most here |
| Words | Kinetic type cut to a voice-over, one word per beat | Mark the beats first; Mark audio beats in the workspace's Fx presets puts a marker on each beat |
| Lines | Lower thirds and lists where lines arrive in turn | Line breaks are fixed once split, so finish the copy first |
| Paragraphs | Cards and blocks of copy that animate as units | Fewest layers; each block still animates as a whole |
| Separate text | Two-line titles for vertical video | Balances by length, so check the break reads well |
How do I shatter text in After Effects?
Apply the built-in Shatter effect (Effect › Simulation › Shatter) to the text layer, or split the text first and animate the pieces yourself. Shatter breaks a layer into shards and throws them with a force you place.
Shatter is old and fiddly, and slow to preview, but it comes with every copy of After Effects. Use a bold, simple font, since thin strokes break into slivers that read as noise, and preview at a lower resolution while you place the force.
If you'd rather drop letters than break them, you may not need to split at all: Type studio's Multi presets include Letter Drop. To hand-animate it, split by characters and give each letter a short fall with an overshoot; the workspace's Easing lab has Bounce and Elastic curve types for that.
Can I split text into letters on a Mac?
Yes, with the native methods above: text animators, duplicate-and-mask, or Create Shapes from Text. Text exploder itself is in the mouzeclick workspace, which is Windows only.
Two other routes run on both systems. mouzekit, one of the mouzeclick extensions for After Effects, runs on Windows and Mac and has Text in: eight looks applied by character, word or line, with a live preview and no splitting. Outside mouzeclick, Jake Bartlett's Split Text script splits text by characters, words, lines or paragraphs, keeps the original styling and position, and parents the pieces to a controller null. It's free after a mailing-list sign-up, has install paths for Mac and Windows, and was at version 1.0.2 (18 March 2026) when we checked.

Questions people ask
Can After Effects split text into separate layers automatically?
Not with its own commands. After Effects can animate per character with text animators and can turn text into shapes, but it has no command that puts each letter on its own layer. You do it by duplicating and masking, with a script, or with Text exploder in the mouzeclick workspace for After Effects on Windows.
Why do my split letters all rotate around the same point?
Because each copy still has the anchor point of the whole word. Splitting doesn't move anchors. Select each letter's layer and move its anchor onto the letter with the Pan Behind tool (Y), or use the anchor grid in the mouzeclick workspace to send it to the centre or any of nine spots without moving the layer.
How do I animate text letter by letter without splitting it?
Use a text animator. On the text layer, open Animate, add the property you want (Position, Scale, Opacity or Rotation), then keyframe the Range Selector's Start or End so the change sweeps through the letters. Set Based On under Advanced to words or lines for bigger steps. The text stays one editable layer.
Can I join split letters back into one text layer?
There's no merge command, which is why it pays to keep a switched-off copy of the original before you split. With the mask method you're never far away: every copy is the full text layer, so remove the mask from one of them, delete the rest, and you have the word back as one layer.
What's the difference between Text exploder and Separate text?
Text exploder puts each character, word, line or paragraph of a text layer on its own layer, each placed where it was. Separate text splits a text layer's words into two stacked lines of balanced length, which suits long titles in vertical frames. Both are in the Toolbox of the mouzeclick workspace for After Effects on Windows.
Can I split shape layers or masks into separate layers too?
On Windows, yes: Mask layer splitter in the workspace's Fx presets puts each mask on its own layer, and Alt-click does the same for the groups inside a shape layer. After Effects has no command for either, so without it you duplicate the layer once per mask or group and delete what you don't need on each copy.
Is Text exploder available on Mac?
No. Text exploder is in the mouzeclick workspace for After Effects, and the workspaces are Windows only; the Mac app does not include them. On a Mac, use text animators, the duplicate-and-mask method or a script. mouzekit, which runs on Windows and Mac, animates text by character, word or line without splitting it.
