How to move the anchor point in After Effects without moving the layer
Press Y for the Pan Behind (Anchor Point) tool and drag the anchor point: After Effects changes Position by the same amount, so the layer stays where it is. Ctrl+Alt+Home (Cmd+Option+Home on a Mac) centres the anchor in the layer's content. For exact corners and edges, the anchor grid in the mouzeclick workspace on Windows sends the anchor to any of nine spots without moving the layer.
- The anchor point is the pivot a layer scales and rotates around.
- The Pan Behind tool (Y) moves it and compensates Position. Typing new Anchor Point values moves the layer.
- Set the anchor before you keyframe Position, whatever tool you use.
- mouzeclick's anchor grid: nine buttons, and Shift-click the centre to centre the layer in the comp. Windows only.
Why is my anchor point in the wrong place in After Effects?
Because After Effects puts it where the layer's own coordinates start, not where you'd want the layer to turn. The anchor point is the pivot: Scale grows from it, Rotation spins around it, and Position moves it. Where it starts depends on the layer:
- Footage, solids and precomps: the centre of the layer's frame. For a precomp that's the centre of the whole precomp, even when the artwork inside is small and off to one side.
- Text: on the baseline, not in the middle of the letters, so a title scales from its baseline.
- Shape layers: often in the middle of the comp rather than the middle of the shape, because each shape group carries its own transform inside the layer.
Press A with a layer selected to show only its Anchor Point property, then Shift+P to add Position, and keep both in view while you work.
How do I move the anchor point without moving the layer?
Use the Pan Behind tool. Select the layer, press Y and drag the anchor point, the small crosshair, in the Composition panel. After Effects changes Position by the same amount, so the layer doesn't move on screen.
Two more native ways:
- Centre it on the content: Ctrl+Alt+Home (Cmd+Option+Home). On a MacBook without a Home key, Fn+Left Arrow stands in for Home.
- Quick Set Anchor, if your version has it. Adobe has been testing a picker with nine points, the corners and the centres of the edges, opened from the Properties panel or with Shift+Tab. Adobe announced it for After Effects beta 25.1 in October 2024 and was still updating it in beta builds in April 2026. It works on 2D layers only.
What not to do: type new numbers into Anchor Point in the timeline. That moves the pivot without changing Position, so the layer jumps. It's the right move only when you want the jump.
Why does my animation change when I move the anchor point?
Because Pan Behind keeps the layer in place by changing Position, and on a layer with Position keyframes it can only change the value at the current time. The other keyframes stay as they were, so the motion path bends. Rotation and Scale keyframes don't break, but they now turn and grow around the new point, which is usually why you moved it.
Two fixes:
- Set the anchor first. Make it the first thing you do on a new layer, before any Position keyframe, whatever tool you use.
- Use a null as the pivot. If the layer is already animated, add a null (Layer › New › Null Object), put it where you want the pivot, parent the layer to it and rotate or scale the null instead. The layer's own keyframes stay untouched.
Adobe's April 2026 note on Quick Set Anchor says the beta now rewrites existing Position keyframes so the animation looks the same. If your version doesn't have it, the two fixes above still apply.
How does the mouzeclick anchor grid work?
It's nine buttons in the Toolbox of the mouzeclick workspace for After Effects: the four corners, the four edge midpoints and the centre. Click one and the anchor moves to that spot in the layer's bounds, without moving the layer.
- Shift-click the centre to centre the layer in the comp instead.
- Transform, live sits in the same Toolbox: scrub Anchor Point, Position, Scale, Rotation and Opacity, step between keyframes on each row, Reset, and undo the last slider drag. 3D layers add X and Y Rotation.
- Text re-align shows up for text layers: left, centre or right justification without the text jumping, centring in the comp, and Reset anchor.
The rule about animated layers still applies: set the anchor before you add Position keyframes. The Premiere Pro workspace has nine anchor buttons of its own. Both workspaces are Windows only; the Mac app does not include them. Since 0.58.40 they come with every mouzeclick licence on Windows.
Anchors matter most after a split. If you've just used Text exploder or Precomp sep, every new layer needs its own pivot before it animates well.
How do I centre, align and distribute layers in After Effects?
Open Window › Align. Choose whether to align to the composition or the selection, then click an align button; distributing needs three or more layers. To centre a layer in the frame, align it to the composition and press both centre buttons.
The workspace's align bar does the same from the panel you already have open: left, centre, right, top, middle or bottom, against the comp, the selection, a key layer or the layers as a group. Distribute spaces three or more layers with equal gaps, across or down. Fit and fill scales the selected layers to fit the comp or to fill it.
Which anchor point tool should I use in After Effects?
For a pivot by eye, Pan Behind. For the exact centre, Ctrl+Alt+Home. For corners and edge midpoints on many layers a day, a nine-spot grid.
| Method | Keeps the layer in place | Where the anchor goes | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pan Behind tool (Y) | Yes | Anywhere, by eye | After Effects, Windows and Mac |
| Ctrl+Alt+Home | Yes | Centre of the content | After Effects, Windows and Mac |
| Typing Anchor Point values | No, the layer moves | Exact numbers | After Effects, Windows and Mac |
| Quick Set Anchor (Adobe beta) | Yes, and rewrites Position keyframes, per Adobe's April 2026 note | Nine points, 2D layers only | Properties panel in beta builds |
| mouzeclick anchor grid | Yes | Nine spots in the layer's bounds | mouzeclick workspace, Windows only |
Other panels do this too. Animation Composer, which has a free plan, lists an Anchor Point Mover among its tools, and Mt. Mograph's Motion Studio advertises one-click anchor point snapping; both run on Mac and Windows. Motion Tools Pro has a widget to position anchor points precisely. If anchors on a Mac are all you need, Animation Composer or Motion Studio may suit you better than mouzeclick; see how it compares with Motion Studio and Animation Composer.
Can I use the anchor grid on a Mac?
No: the anchor grid is in the mouzeclick workspace, which is Windows only. On a Mac the native methods work the same way, and the mouzeclick mouse app does run there (see mouzeclick on Mac). Put Y and Cmd+Option+Home on mouse buttons or gestures that only fire while After Effects is in front, and the two anchor moves you make most are one click away.
On both systems, the After Effects Tool wheel holds 114 tools in 13 groups behind one held button or key; the radial menu for After Effects guide shows how it's laid out.
Nine anchor spots, one click each, on Windows. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.
Questions people ask
What is the shortcut for the anchor point in After Effects?
A shows a selected layer's Anchor Point property in the timeline, Y picks the Pan Behind tool for dragging it, and Ctrl+Alt+Home (Cmd+Option+Home on a Mac) centres it on the layer's content. For corners and edge midpoints, use a nine-spot picker: Adobe's Quick Set Anchor (Shift+Tab) if your version has it, or the mouzeclick anchor grid on Windows.
How do I move the anchor point to the centre of a text layer?
Select the text layer and press Ctrl+Alt+Home (Cmd+Option+Home); the anchor moves to the middle of the letters and the text stays put. In the mouzeclick workspace on Windows, the centre button of the anchor grid does the same in one click. Do it before you animate Position, so the move doesn't bend your keyframes.
How do I move the anchor point of a shape layer?
Ctrl+Alt+Home centres the layer's anchor on its content. Inside the layer, each shape group has its own Transform with its own Anchor Point, under Contents, then the group, then Transform. Change that one when a single group inside the layer needs to spin around its own centre while the rest stays still.
Why does my layer jump when I change the anchor point?
You probably typed or scrubbed the Anchor Point value in the timeline. That moves the pivot without compensating Position, so the layer shifts on screen. Undo, then drag the anchor with the Pan Behind tool (Y) instead, or use Ctrl+Alt+Home or an anchor grid; all three change Position to keep the layer still.
How do I rotate a layer around one corner?
Move the anchor point to that corner first, then rotate. Drag it there with the Pan Behind tool, or click the matching corner button in the mouzeclick anchor grid on Windows. If the layer is already animated, add a null at the corner, parent the layer to it and rotate the null, so your keyframes stay as they are.
Does the anchor grid move the layer?
No. Each of the nine buttons moves the anchor to that spot in the layer's bounds and leaves the layer where it is on screen. The one exception is on purpose: Shift-click the centre button and the layer itself is centred in the comp. The grid is in the Toolbox of the mouzeclick workspace for After Effects on Windows.
Does the Premiere Pro workspace have anchor buttons too?
Yes. The Premiere Pro workspace's Toolbox has nine anchor buttons, next to its layer and nest tools and a Transform section with keyframe buttons on every row. Like the After Effects workspace it's Windows only. For the other Premiere Pro tools, see the Premiere Pro tools page.
Does the workspace cost extra?
No. Since 0.58.40 both workspaces come with every mouzeclick licence on Windows. There's one plan with everything included, $25 a month or $249 a year, and you can try it free for 3 days with no card. See the pricing section for the lifetime option.
