The After Effects plugins Reddit actually recommends, from 566 comments
Across 15 r/AfterEffects and r/MotionDesign threads from March 2024 to October 2026, Reddit's most-named After Effects plugins are Deep Glow (13 threads), FX Console, Overlord and EaseCopy (11 each) and True Comp Duplicator (10). FX Console has the most mentions (64) and Overlord the highest comment score (440). The advice that comes with them: learn After Effects first, then buy only what you need.
- 15 threads and 566 comments read: r/AfterEffects (13) and r/MotionDesign (2), March 2024 to October 2026
- FX Console has the most mentions (64); Overlord the highest comment score (440)
- Two of the top five, EaseCopy and True Comp Duplicator, are scripts, not plugins
- No thread mentions mouzeclick. We make it, and our view is labelled as ours
How did we count Reddit's After Effects plugin picks?
We read the 15 most-commented Reddit threads from March 2024 to October 2026 whose titles ask which After Effects plugins to use: 13 in r/AfterEffects and 2 in r/MotionDesign, 566 comments in all, with deleted comments left out. A script counted every post or comment that names a tool, once per comment, and added up the votes on those comments. It also flags comments whose authors say they made a tool, which misses the makers who don't say so, and several post in these threads.
The threads came from title searches ("plugins", "best plugins", "essential plugins", "recommend plugins", "free plugin" and "free plugins") in the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit posts, read on 31 October 2026. The plain "plugins" search stops at the newest 100 posts, back to February 2026. Searches for "must have" and "favorite plugins" timed out, and r/VideoEditing had no After Effects plugin thread with more than three comments.
We aren't affiliated with Reddit or with any tool below. We make mouzeclick, a mouse app with After Effects panels. None of the 15 threads mentions it, so our view sits in its own labelled section near the end. Opinions are paraphrased and linked to the comment they come from, and every thread is listed under Sources.
Which After Effects plugins does Reddit recommend most?
Deep Glow turns up in the most threads, 13 of 15. FX Console gets the most mentions (64) and Overlord the highest comment score (440). The top 15, by threads and then mentions:
| Tool | Type | Threads (of 15) | Mentions | Comment score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deep Glow | Effect plugin | 13 | 39 | 313 |
| FX Console (Video Copilot) | Plugin, free | 11 | 64 | 413 |
| Overlord (Battle Axe) | Desktop app | 11 | 57 | 440 |
| EaseCopy | Script, name-your-own-price | 11 | 44 | 326 |
| True Comp Duplicator | Script | 10 | 41 | 267 |
| Flow | Extension | 9 | 33 | 227 |
| Motion 4 / Motion Studio (Mt. Mograph) | Extension, subscription | 9 | 32 | 133 |
| MoBar | Extension, free tier | 9 | 16 | 92 |
| Animation Composer (Mister Horse) | Free plan and subscription | 7 | 20 | 50 |
| KBar | Extension | 7 | 18 | 93 |
| Motion Tools Pro (Motion Design School) | Extension | 7 | 16 | 27 |
| Duik | Script, free | 7 | 11 | 18 |
| Kease | Extension, free tier | 7 | 10 | 26 |
| Red Giant suites (Maxon) | Effect plugins, subscription | 6 | 18 | 95 |
| Shade | Extension | 6 | 7 | 16 |
"Comment score" adds up the votes on comments that name a tool, so one popular reply moves a tool a long way. Just below the cut sit Saber (6 threads), AE Global Renamer (6), Sapphire (5), Void (5) and Optical Flares (5).
Reddit uses "plugin" loosely. EaseCopy, True Comp Duplicator and Duik are scripts, most of the rest are panels, and Overlord is a desktop app; only Deep Glow, FX Console and the Red Giant suites are plugins in the strict sense. Our plugin vs script vs extension explainer sorts out the file types.
Is Overlord worth it, according to Reddit?
For designers whose work starts in Illustrator, mostly yes. Overlord moves layers from Illustrator, Figma and Photoshop into After Effects, and the most-upvoted answer in the biggest 2026 thread names it first. One commenter wrote: "For me Overlord was like finding God." (r/AfterEffects, March 2024)
- Praise: a reply in the agency thread says it changed how they get Illustrator files into After Effects, and another notes it handles Figma and Photoshop too.
- Complaints: paying about $75 for something Adobe's own apps ought to do; no raster images from Illustrator; and a full installer that locked-down work machines can't run. One commenter believes Adobe is adding Illustrator copy-paste that works like Overlord, but still thinks Overlord has enough other features to be worth buying.
From Battle Axe's page: $75.00 USD for a perpetual licence with a year of feature updates, on two machines for one user, and it keeps working if you don't renew. Windows 10 (22H2 or later) or macOS 12 or later; after the first activation it runs offline.
Do you still need FX Console now that After Effects has Quick Apply?
Less than you did, but it costs nothing, so most people keep it. FX Console is Video Copilot's effect search: press a shortcut, type, apply. It's named 64 times across 11 threads, more often than any other tool.
- Praise: people say it should be built into After Effects, call it the biggest free workflow upgrade, and it's the second most upvoted reply in the r/MotionDesign thread, just behind Overlord.
- Since Quick Apply: After Effects' own Quick Apply (Ctrl/Cmd+Enter) now does the search, and several commenters find FX Console partly redundant. One user still relies on its screenshot option, which they don't think Quick Apply has, and another warns that the new Properties panel can stop it opening on a layer.
From Video Copilot's page: free, with Windows and Mac downloads; version 1.0.7 adds language support for After Effects 2026.
Which effect plugins get the most praise?
Deep Glow, by reach: 13 of the 15 threads name it. The effect list behind it is short: the Red Giant suites, Video Copilot's free Saber, Sapphire and Optical Flares.
- Deep Glow: pricey but much better than the native glow, and fast enough against stacked native effects to mean delivering a day sooner. Against it: one user uninstalled it after crashes (the developer replied that the current version shouldn't crash and asked for a ticket), and one commenter's team dropped it at work because clients who get the project files don't usually own it.
- Red Giant (Maxon): called the most complete general bundle; the grievance is the subscription, and one user says glow tools alone put you near $800 a year.
- Saber: free, and still hard to beat for energy effects, one reply says.
- Element 3D: called close to abandoned, now that there are better ways to bring 3D into After Effects.
Why do two scripts rank near the top of the plugin threads?
Because they fix chores After Effects still makes slow, and people are surprised they aren't built in. EaseCopy is named in 11 threads and True Comp Duplicator in 10.
- True Comp Duplicator makes independent copies of a comp, which people use for language and colour versions. The second-highest comment in the biggest 2026 thread calls it the one tool they can't live without. Against it: bloated projects full of same-named comps (a reply says its settings fix that), and for versions with many names, the developer of Rename-a-Duper suggests that script instead.
- EaseCopy copies eases from one set of keyframes to another, and a 51-point comment points out that it copies keyframe values too. One user found its commands can be mapped to hotkeys. Two caveats come up: it's name-your-own-price, not free, and Flow also copies and pastes eases.
Our After Effects scripts Reddit round-up covers these and the smaller scripts in more depth.
What do people say about Flow, Motion Studio, KBar and MoBar?
- Flow (9 threads), an easing curve panel: one user says it doubled their speed overnight, another finds it easier than the graph editor. The doubt: beginners may never learn the graph editor, and people argue it out against Arc, a script that sets eases with a single slider. aescripts lists Flow at $35.00 with a free trial.
- Motion 4 / Motion Studio (9 threads): one fan says many of its features could be sold on their own. The complaint is the move to a monthly subscription, and one user can't find Motion 4 on its own any more. Mt. Mograph's page shows $13 per seat a month or $132 a year, with a 7-day trial.
- KBar (7 threads), buttons for your effects, presets and scripts: a user can't imagine working without it, though set-up takes time. $39.99 on aescripts.
- MoBar (9 threads), an icon bar of scripts and actions: a life saver for one commenter in the agency thread, but the free version allows a couple of uses a day.
We compare two of these with our own tools in the Motion Studio comparison and the KBar comparison.
Does Reddit recommend an all-in-one After Effects plugin?
Not really. A separate title search of r/AfterEffects since 2024 found just one thread that says "all in one" about an After Effects tool: an AEJuice bundle post with 4 comments that moderators flagged as possible spam. When people want one panel for many jobs, they name Motion Studio, Motion Tools Pro, MoBar or KBar.
- Motion Studio or Motion Tools Pro? Someone in the agency thread asked exactly that. In 2025 a commenter called Motion Design School's Motion Tools a decent free stand-in for Motion 4, but the school's page showed Motion Tools Pro 2025 at $40 on 31 October 2026.
- A free toolbox that turned paid: "AE Workflow Optimizer", 70+ free scripts, was welcomed in June 2026; when it came back in August as AE Optimizer at $19.99, users pushed back, pointing to the June promise to keep it free.
- No panel makes you fast: the top reply in the agency thread, at 79 points, opens with "Speed is a workflow problem." (r/AfterEffects, February 2026) and says to find where your project actually slows down before buying tools.
What one panel can and can't cover is in our all-in-one After Effects extension guide.
What do Reddit users complain about?
Mostly subscriptions, and tools Adobe should have built in.
- Subscriptions. Motion Studio, Red Giant and Animation Composer all draw it; when Mister Horse's paid tier went monthly, the person who started the time-savers thread cited $20 a month and others agreed.
- Tools that should be native. A line that keeps coming back: Adobe should build these in.
- Work machines. Buying licences for every seat keeps one team on plain After Effects, and agency designers are told to check that IT approves scripts and plugins first.
- Dated looks. Plugin effects can date your work.
- Clones and makers. One commenter says everyone is making the same plugin over and over, and the makers of several tools in the tally post in these threads too.
What does Reddit say to do before you buy After Effects plugins?
Learn After Effects first, then buy one tool at a time for a job you repeat. Beginners asking for must-have plugins get that answer again and again.
- Learn the native tools. Quick Apply already covers much of FX Console, and Flow only speeds up a graph editor you should know anyway.
- Start free. FX Console, Duik and Saber cost nothing. Our free After Effects plugins Reddit round-up separates the truly free from name-your-own-price.
- Buy when a job hurts. Commenters say buy only when you need it, and in sale weeks trial first.
- Think about hand-off. If clients open your project files, prefer tools that leave plain After Effects layers behind.

Where mouzeclick fits (our view)
This section is ours, not Reddit's: none of the 15 threads or 566 comments mentions mouzeclick. It overlaps with a few of Reddit's picks and replaces none of the effect plugins.
- Like FX Console: Search effects finds an effect as you type, under After Effects' own effect categories, and Shift+Enter pins it to the After Effects Tool wheel: 114 tools in 13 groups on any mouse. Windows and Mac.
- Like KBar: mouzerun makes one-click buttons from a script, expression, preset, menu command or ease, and mouzekit adds 28 After Effects tools in seven groups, one undo step each. Both are among the 15 After Effects extensions. Windows and Mac.
- Like Flow and Motion Tools Pro: the mouzeclick workspace has an Easing lab with six curve types and a Toolbox with a 9-button anchor grid, Precomp sep, Un-precomp, True dup (an unlinked copy of a precomp) and a Text exploder. Windows only. Our easing presets guide shows the native way too.
What it doesn't replace: it isn't an effect plugin like Deep Glow or Saber, it doesn't bring in design files like Overlord, and it doesn't rig characters like Duik.
The limits: no free tier, just a 3-day trial with no card, then one plan at $25 a month, $249 a year, or $499 once for one of the first 100 lifetime keys, which works for as long as mouzeclick runs. The workspace is Windows only; the extensions, Search effects and Tool wheel also run on macOS 12 or newer (see the Mac guide). The app needs an internet connection while it runs, and it's an installed app, so a locked-down work machine may not allow it. Plans are in the pricing section.
Try the mouzeclick After Effects tools next to the plugins Reddit recommends. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.
Questions people ask
What is the best After Effects plugin according to Reddit?
There's no single winner. Deep Glow appears in the most threads (13 of 15), FX Console gets the most mentions (64) and Overlord the highest comment score (440). Which is best depends on the job: glow, finding effects fast, or bringing in Illustrator files. Two scripts, EaseCopy and True Comp Duplicator, rank alongside them, and many commenters add that no plugin replaces knowing After Effects.Which free After Effects plugins does Reddit recommend?
FX Console is the free pick named most often, then Duik for character rigging and Saber for energy effects. Void and Mover also come up as free. Watch the wording: EaseCopy and True Comp Duplicator are often called free but are name-your-own-price. Our free plugins page lists what actually costs nothing, from 13 threads about free tools. Is Motion 4 a subscription now?
Motion 4 itself is no longer sold. Mt. Mograph replaced it with Motion Studio, which is subscription-only: $13 per seat a month, or $132 a year, with a 7-day trial and no card. Existing Motion 4 lifetime licences still work for that version. On Reddit, the switch is the most common complaint about it, though one subscriber thinks the monthly releases make it well worth it.Do you still need Overlord now that Illustrator can paste into After Effects?
Its fans say yes. When someone asked exactly that in April 2026, the reply was that Overlord does much more and works with Figma and Photoshop as well as Illustrator. Another commenter expects Adobe's Illustrator copy-paste to work like Overlord but still thinks its other features make it worth buying. Battle Axe's page lists editable text with per-character styling, gradients and masks. If you only paste simple vector shapes now and then, try copy-paste in your version of After Effects before paying $75.Arc or Flow: which easing tool do Redditors prefer?
Neither wins outright. In the biggest 2026 thread people argued both ways: Arc for setting an ease with one percentage slider, Flow for its own panel and a library of presets you can see and build on. Flow is named in 9 of the 15 threads. It costs $35.00 on aescripts with a free trial, so test it on a real job against the graph editor you already have.Is there one big bundle of After Effects effects that everyone uses?
The closest Reddit gets is Red Giant from Maxon, which commenters call the most complete general bundle. The complaint is cost: it's a subscription, and one user says glow tools alone can run near $800 a year. Sapphire comes up as the other big suite, and one commenter calls it completely necessary. What should I buy in an aescripts sale, according to Reddit?
Only tools you already know you need. In the November 2025 Black Friday thread the advice was to buy only what After Effects can't do natively; in the July 2026 summer-sale thread, to trial first. One commenter admits to spending quite a bit over the years on expensive toys used only once. List the chores that eat your week before the sale starts, and buy against that list.Does Reddit recommend mouzeclick?
No. None of the 15 threads or 566 comments we read mentions it, and neither does any search result we saved. We make mouzeclick, which is why it's on this page at all, in a section labelled as our view.Sources
