How to make YouTube chapters from Premiere Pro markers
Put a sequence marker at the start of each chapter in Premiere Pro, name it, export the markers, turn each time into minutes and seconds and paste the list into the YouTube description. YouTube needs the first timestamp at 00:00, at least three in ascending order, and no chapter shorter than 10 seconds. mouzemark writes that list from your markers, ready to paste.
- YouTube's rules: first timestamp 00:00, at least three, in ascending order, 10 seconds minimum per chapter.
- Premiere's own route: File › Export › Markers, then tidy the file in a spreadsheet.
- Drop the frames, and watch the sequence start time: a sequence that starts at 01:00:00:00 puts every chapter an hour late.
- mouzemark: chapters from the markers or colours you pick; export CSV, text, SRT, EDL or JSON.
- mouzemark also imports chapters, CSV, timecodes, SRT or EDL back as markers.
How do I make YouTube chapters in Premiere Pro?
Mark each chapter start on the sequence, name the markers, then turn the list into timestamps for the description. Step by step:
- Park the playhead at the start of each section and press M with no clips selected, so the marker goes on the sequence and not on a clip.
- Double-click each marker and type the chapter title in its Name field. That name becomes the chapter title, so write it for viewers: "Lighting the set", not "sec 3 v2".
- Put the first marker on the very first frame. That's your 00:00.
- Read the list off the Markers panel (Window › Markers) or export it with File › Export › Markers.
- Turn each time into minutes and seconds, put the title after it, one per line, and paste the lines into the video's description.
Step 5 is the slow one and where the mistakes happen, so the next two sections are about it.
What are YouTube's rules for chapters?
Four rules, from YouTube's help page on video chapters (checked 31 October 2026), plus how they sit with automatic chapters and when chapters won't show at all.
| Rule | What YouTube says | What it means in Premiere |
|---|---|---|
| First timestamp | Starts with 00:00 | A marker on the sequence's first frame |
| How many | At least three | Three or more chapter markers |
| Order | Ascending | Earliest first, as the Markers panel lists them |
| Shortest chapter | 10 seconds | Markers at least 10 seconds apart, and the last one at least 10 seconds before the end |
| Automatic chapters | Your timestamps override them | Your list wins over YouTube's own guesses |
| When they don't show | Active strikes, or content that may be inappropriate for some viewers | Not something you can fix in the edit |
YouTube also says that if you don't have access to chapters yet, you apply for access to Advanced features. Worth checking on a new channel before you blame the timestamps.
Which Premiere Pro marker type and colour should I use for chapters?
Any type works. YouTube builds chapters from the timestamps in your description (or makes automatic ones), so the marker type in Premiere makes no difference to YouTube. Premiere's own Chapter marker type is meant for formats that carry chapter points inside the file; YouTube's help page doesn't describe reading those, so don't rely on them.
Colour is what helps. Premiere has eight marker colours. Give chapters one of their own and keep the others for notes, fixes and beats, so a chapter list never picks up a "fix this audio" marker by accident. mouzemark builds chapters from the markers or colours you pick, which is where a dedicated colour pays off.
How do I export markers from Premiere Pro for YouTube?
Use File › Export › Markers and save the file, then open it in a spreadsheet. Three things to clean up before it goes anywhere near YouTube:
- Frames. Times come out as timecode with frames, such as 00:04:12:17. YouTube wants 4:12. Drop the frames; rounding down means the chapter starts a fraction early rather than after the first word.
- Start time. A sequence set up the broadcast way starts at 01:00:00:00, which makes every marker read an hour late. Subtract the start time, or set the sequence to start at zero before you export.
- One column. In February 2026 editors reported on Adobe's community that the marker export put every field in a single spreadsheet column. If yours does that, split the column on its separator (Data › Text to Columns in Excel) and carry on.
If a chapter is missing from the export, check whether that marker sits on a clip instead of the sequence. Clip markers live on the clip.
How does mouzemark turn Premiere Pro markers into YouTube chapters?
It reads your markers and writes the chapter lines for you. Open the sequence, then Window › Extensions › mouzemark. It lists the sequence's markers with time, name, comments and length. Pick which markers count (all of them, or only the colours you choose) and it gives you YouTube chapters ready to paste into the description.
The same list exports as CSV, text, SRT, EDL or JSON, for a client, a subtitle tool or another editor's timeline. SRT is handy for a podcast host who wants chapter titles as a sidecar file.
Two things it doesn't do for you: it doesn't write chapter titles (your marker names are the titles, so name them well), and the creative call of where a chapter starts is still yours. Give the list a last read against the rules above before you paste. mouzemark comes with mouzeclick, one of its eight Premiere Pro extensions.
Can I bring YouTube chapters back into Premiere Pro?
Yes, with mouzemark. It imports chapters, CSV, timecodes, SRT or EDL and turns them into markers on the sequence. That covers jobs that are a pain by hand:
- The video is already live and you're cutting a shorter version: paste the description's chapters in and every section is marked.
- A producer sends timecodes in an email or a document.
- A client marked up a review copy and exported their notes as a file.
What else can markers do in Premiere Pro with mouzemark?
Once the markers are in a list, mouzemark can turn them into edits and clips too.
- Markers into edits on the targeted tracks, or on every track that isn't locked.
- Ranges into sequences. Duration markers, or marker to marker, become a sequence each or one together. Every chapter as its own sequence is a quick start for Shorts; reframe them with the split screen guide.
- Subclips from duration markers, in a bin named mouzemark subclips.
- Batch changes: recolour, rename with numbers, shift, snap to the nearest cut, remove duplicates.
- Copy markers from a clip to the sequence, and from the sequence to a clip.
Snap to the nearest cut matters more than it sounds. Markers dropped during playback usually sit a few frames off the cut, and a chapter that starts two frames early opens on the tail of the previous shot when a viewer jumps to it. Undo takes back mouzemark's last change if a batch goes wrong.
Do other Premiere Pro plugins make YouTube chapters?
Two AI plugins do. AutoCut includes Chapters in its AI Plan, and FireCut names chapters among its features; FireCut says its AI and transcription features need an internet connection. Both run in Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, on Mac and Windows.
If you want chapters made for you rather than from markers you place, try those first. mouzemark works from markers you place and name, which fits videos where the chapter points are editorial choices. The comparisons go deeper: AutoCut alternative and FireCut alternative.
Does mouzemark work on Mac, and what does it cost?
Yes. It works in Premiere Pro on macOS 12 or newer, the same as on Windows 10 and 11 (Mac install guide). Once the Premiere panels are installed from the mouzeclick app, restart Premiere and open mouzemark from Window › Extensions with a sequence open.
It's part of the one mouzeclick plan: $25 a month or $249 for a year (pricing), with a 3-day free trial and no card. A creator or friend code takes 10% off a new customer's first 30-day or 1-year payment. If you also want captions written from the same edit, mouzeclick's auto captions run on your computer, on Windows only for now.
Turn your markers into YouTube chapters in one step. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.
Questions people ask
Why aren't my chapters showing on YouTube?
Check the four rules first: the first timestamp is 00:00, there are at least three, they go in ascending order, and every chapter is at least 10 seconds long. If they're right, YouTube's help page names two other causes: active strikes on the channel, or content that may be inappropriate for some viewers. On a new channel, check you have access to chapters at all.
Do I write 0:00 or 00:00?
YouTube's help page says the first timestamp starts with 00:00, so start there. After that, minutes and seconds with a colon, such as 4:12, then a space and the title. For videos over an hour, add the hours, such as 1:05:30. Put one chapter on each line.
How many chapters should a video have?
As many as there are real changes of topic, no more. For a 15-minute tutorial that's often five to eight. Chapters every 30 seconds read as clutter, and YouTube's 10-second minimum is a floor, not a target. If a section is too short to name clearly, it probably belongs to the one before.
Can I use duration markers as chapters?
Yes. A chapter only needs a start time, so the start of a duration marker is the timestamp. Duration markers earn their keep elsewhere: in mouzemark each one can become its own sequence or a subclip, which is a quick way to turn a long video's chapters into short clips.
Can I add chapter markers while I watch the edit down?
Yes, and it's the fastest way to place them. Play the cut, press M at each topic change with nothing selected, and name the markers afterwards. If you'd rather keep your hand on the mouse, put Add Marker on a mouse button; the mouse shortcuts guide shows how. Then snap them to the nearest cut.
Do Premiere markers end up inside the exported video?
Don't count on it for YouTube. Its help page describes two sources of chapters, the timestamps in your description and the automatic chapters YouTube makes itself, and nothing read from inside the file. Paste the timestamps into the description; that's the route YouTube documents.
Can I undo a mouzemark change?
Yes. Undo in mouzemark takes back its last change, such as a batch rename, a shift or a snap to the nearest cut. Premiere's own undo still works too, a step at a time. If you're about to run a batch on a long sequence, duplicate the sequence first; it costs nothing.
Do chapters help a video get found?
They make the video easier to use, which is the part you control: viewers can jump to the section they came for, and the chapter titles show on the progress bar. Write titles in the words people would search for. Beyond that, YouTube doesn't publish how chapters affect ranking, so treat any promise about it with suspicion.
