The best mouse for video editing, according to 57 Reddit threads
Across 57 Reddit threads from January 2024 to October 2026, the default answer for the best mouse for video editing is the Logitech MX Master: named in 23 threads, with the highest summed comment score (698) and the top reply in two big r/editors threads. Editors with sore wrists move to vertical mice (16 threads) or trackballs (15), and many Mac editors keep Apple's Magic Trackpad beside the mouse.
- 57 threads: r/MouseReview (27), r/editors (18), r/premiere (9) and r/AfterEffects (3), January 2024 to October 2026
- 943 comments read in 17 of the biggest threads; r/VideoEditing isn't covered
- Logitech MX Master: 23 threads, 130 mentions, comment score 698
- No thread mentions mouzeclick, which is software, not a mouse. We make it
How did we count Reddit's mouse recommendations?
We searched post titles for "mouse" in r/editors, r/premiere and r/AfterEffects, and for "editing" in r/MouseReview, from January 2024 to 31 October 2026, in the Arctic Shift archive of public Reddit posts. Many hits were about cursor effects or editor bugs; 57 are about choosing a mouse or pointing device for editing: 27 in r/MouseReview, 18 in r/editors, 9 in r/premiere and 3 in r/AfterEffects.
We read the comments of 17 of the biggest threads, 943 comments once bots are removed; the other 40, including a 60-comment thread about shoulder posture, count by their post text. A script counted every post or comment that names a product, once per comment, and added up those comments' scores. Category rows overlap with model rows: "Trackball (any)" includes the MX Ergo, for example.
Two biases to keep in mind. r/editors supplies most of the comments, and its readers are working editors, many on Mac and many with sore hands, so ergonomic picks show up more than in a typical buyer's search. r/MouseReview leans to gamers who also edit. The r/VideoEditing search timed out four times, so that subreddit is missing.
We aren't affiliated with Reddit or with any mouse maker. We make mouzeclick, an app that changes what a mouse's buttons do; no thread mentions it, so our view sits in its own labelled section. Opinions are paraphrased and linked to their comments.
Which mouse does Reddit recommend most for video editing?
The Logitech MX Master, by threads and by votes. Wacom tablets have more mentions, but in fewer threads: two of the 57 threads are specifically mouse versus tablet, and those lift the count. The top 15, by threads and then mentions:
| Mouse or device | Threads (of 57) | Mentions | Comment score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logitech, any model | 31 | 180 | 596 |
| Logitech MX Master (2S, 3, 3S, 4) | 23 | 130 | 698 |
| Vertical mouse (any) | 16 | 128 | 300 |
| Trackball (any) | 15 | 116 | 270 |
| Apple Magic Trackpad or other trackpad | 14 | 56 | 148 |
| Apple Magic Mouse | 14 | 32 | 66 |
| Wacom or other pen tablet | 13 | 173 | 480 |
| Kensington trackballs (Expert, SlimBlade, Orbit) | 13 | 47 | 109 |
| Logitech G502 | 13 | 24 | 37 |
| Logitech MX Vertical | 11 | 38 | 101 |
| Razer (any model) | 10 | 33 | 49 |
| Logitech G Pro, Superlight, G305 or G703 | 9 | 13 | 11 |
| Logitech trackballs (MX Ergo, Ergo M575) | 8 | 20 | 58 |
| Corsair (Scimitar and others) | 6 | 9 | 9 |
| Logitech G604 or G600 | 5 | 15 | 23 |
"Comment score" adds up the votes on the comments that name a product, so a few hugely upvoted replies count for a lot. Just below the cut-off, the cheap Anker vertical mouse has 37 points from only 10 mentions.
Why is the Logitech MX Master Reddit's default answer?
Because it's the safe pick, and plenty of working editors already own one. The top reply in the biggest r/editors thread (151 comments) is just "MX Master crew rise up", at 133 points (r/editors, April 2024); the top reply in the Mac thread names it too, at 126. One editor went on a shoot where every freelancer turned up with the same mouse.
What editors praise
- The side thumb wheel for scrolling the timeline sideways, a fast main wheel and plenty of button and gesture mapping.
- On a Mac, the free-spinning wheel stands in for the Magic Mouse swipe.
- It pairs with three computers at once, which suits editors on several machines a day.
- It lasts: one editor's is almost ten years old, and their whole company now uses them.
What they complain about
- Weight and size. One editor says it's "Like shoving a brick around my desk" (r/editors, June 2025); another says about 140 g is far too heavy and suggests a wireless gaming mouse under 70 g. One owner who finds it too big uses an MX Anywhere instead.
- Logitech's software: one owner never remaps the buttons because they dislike it.
- It isn't made for left-handers, which rules it out for one left-handed commenter.
- A heavy scroller says the wheel couldn't keep up, and an MX Master 3S owner asks how to make the thumb wheel zoom and scrub at once.
Logitech's own app, Logi Options+, sets buttons and gestures per app, with Premiere Pro among the listed apps; its page asks for Windows 10 or macOS 14 or later. One r/premiere user asks for Action Ring layouts for Premiere.
Vertical mouse or trackball: what do editors with sore wrists say?
Both have loyal converts. This is what editors report about their own hands, not medical advice; if something hurts, see a professional.
- Vertical mice (16 threads). One editor says vertical should be the default design; two others say moving from an MX Master to the MX Vertical ended their wrist pain: one needed about a week to adjust, and the other has had no trouble for three years. The cheap Anker vertical gets a lot of votes: cheap and lasts forever (23 points), about $15 and five years of use, and one editor owns three. Against: the MX Vertical feels cheap next to the Master, vertical mice move the pain elsewhere for one editor, and big hands struggle to find one.
- Trackballs (15 threads). An MX Ergo user switched years ago for shoulder pain (20 points), and a Kensington Expert owner has used the same one for over a decade. They feel strange at first, the MX Ergo's speed toggle helps precision, and sound editors use them a lot. In r/premiere's trackball thread, an Elecom Huge owner likes it for scrubbing but found a Kensington Orbit lost track; another has used an Orbit for two years. Against: one editor got hand strain from them.
Two replies point at the desk before the device: raising the chair so the elbow clears the desk fixed one editor's pain with an MX Master (19 points), and another stresses chair and desk height.
Is a Wacom tablet better than a mouse for editing?
For some long-time users, yes, but Reddit says it's about comfort, not speed. The top reply in the mouse-versus-tablet thread (28 points) is that it's about ergonomics, not efficiency.
- Editors with 15 to 20 years on a tablet report no arm pain and recovery from severe carpal tunnel.
- Once you're used to it, one says nothing is faster across the timeline, but that takes about six months.
- Expect accidental drag-and-drops at first, and use it exclusively for a week or two.
- One user developed a callus from the pen; another got hand strain.
Which mouse do Mac editors use with Premiere and After Effects?
Mostly an MX Master, often with Apple's Magic Trackpad beside it. A 59-point reply in r/editors keeps a trackpad next to the MX, and an MX owner says they know no Apple user with an Apple mouse, but plenty with the trackpad.
- Magic Trackpad. After 15 years of trying everything, one editor calls it the most ergonomic, and in another thread the same editor calls it a quieter, easier option than the two MX models they used before.
- Magic Mouse. Its fans stay for the sideways swipe through the timeline; one finds it hurts, and its gestures keep zooming Premiere's viewers by accident.
- Mac quirks. G502 scrolling is poor on a Mac, and an MX Anywhere's wheel stops until a restart.
- After Effects on macOS. In r/AfterEffects, the top answer is the MX Master 3S, with the MX Ergo, MX Vertical and a Wacom close behind, even though the poster found the 3S bulky and heavy.
Which gaming mice do editors use for extra buttons?
The ones with the most side buttons. Editors who want more than back and forward under the thumb name these:
- Logitech G502 (13 threads): cheap enough that one editor got management to buy them for a whole facility, and it saves profiles to the mouse, so other machines need no software.
- Logitech G604: fans rate it above the MX Master and like its long-lasting AA battery. One owner says it's no longer made and goes for about $140 used.
- Razer Naga and Viper: one TV editor puts trim left and right on the thumb buttons, and moved from a Naga to a vertical mouse with 11 extra buttons.
- Budget picks: in r/MouseReview's gaming-and-editing thread, the most upvoted reply says to avoid Attack Shark, another owner describes its firmware trouble, and the top named pick is the VXE R1.
A Premiere editor who owns a Stream Deck ended up putting frequent functions on a gaming mouse instead, because the hand never has to leave it. What goes on the buttons? One editor's forward and back buttons zoom the timeline, with a cut on the button above the wheel (11 points); a G502 owner maps jumps to clip start and end.
What do Reddit users complain about?
- Weight, mostly the MX Master's, comes up in thread after thread.
- Vendor software. Logitech's G-Hub is called pretty terrible, and Logitech's MX software put one owner off remapping at all. One Mac user lost every custom button when Logitech's app broke, and asked for a mouse not at the mercy of an app; a G604 fan notes it needs no software running, and a G602 owner has had hotkeys saved on the mouse for 11 years.
- Wireless on Mac. An MX owner reports frequent connection resets.
- Magic Mouse gestures that zoom Premiere's viewers.
- Cheap verticals that feel flimsy, and few that fit big hands.
What does Reddit say to do before you buy a new mouse?
- Learn more keyboard shortcuts. Every movement you skip spares your mouse arm, says a 10-point reply to an editor in pain.
- Map the buttons you already have to timeline zoom, add edit or trim before buying more of them.
- Try the cheap version of a new shape. One MX Vertical owner suggests an inexpensive Anker first, to see if vertical suits you.
- Give it time: about a week for a vertical mouse, weeks to months for a tablet.
- Check the chair and desk before blaming the mouse.
- Mix devices. One editor alternates a Wacom and a vertical mouse to spread the load.
Our Premiere Pro mouse shortcuts guide lists which Premiere actions are worth putting on a button.
Where mouzeclick fits (our view)
This section is ours, not Reddit's: none of the 57 threads mentions mouzeclick, and it isn't a mouse. It's an app that changes what your mouse's buttons do in each app, so it sits on top of whichever mouse Reddit talks you into: the map-your-buttons advice above, done per app.
- Any mouse your computer sees, wired, wireless or Bluetooth, with no driver: an MX Master, a G502, a vertical mouse or a trackball. Up to five standard buttons plus scroll and tilt. It never touches DPI, polling rate, battery or lighting.
- Per app: Mouse 4 cuts a clip in Premiere, switches tabs in Chrome and pastes everywhere else. Chords and gestures give eleven slots per button, and macros record keys, clicks, waits and text.
- Wheels: the Tool wheel holds 112 Premiere Pro tools in 12 segments, or 114 After Effects tools in 13 groups; the Options wheel holds 48 favourites per app.
Where something else is the better pick: if you own an MX Master and edit mainly in Premiere, Logi Options+ already gives per-app buttons and gestures, and may be all you need (see our Options+ comparison). If you want mappings stored in the mouse itself, Reddit points to the G502's onboard memory: mouzeclick is software too, and if it stops or the internet drops, the buttons go back to normal mouse buttons. It handles up to five standard buttons, so the extra keys on an MMO thumb grid are set in the maker's own software. And no app changes how a mouse fits your hand.
The limits: one plan at $25 a month or $249 a year, or $499 once for one of the first 100 lifetime keys, which works for as long as mouzeclick runs; a 3-day trial with no card. The app, buttons, gestures and wheels run on Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 12 or newer; captions, cloud sync, in-app updates and the workspaces are Windows only, and the app needs an internet connection while it runs. More on the After Effects radial menu, the Mac app and pricing; for dials and keypads, see TourBox on Reddit and the Stream Deck for editing on Reddit.
Map the mouse you already own, free for 3 days. One plan with everything included, $25 a month, or $249 for a year.
Questions people ask
What is the best mouse for video editing according to Reddit?
The Logitech MX Master. In our count of 57 threads it's named in 23, has 130 mentions and the highest summed comment score (698), and it's the top reply in two of the biggest r/editors threads. Editors like its thumb wheel for sideways timeline scrolling and its button mapping. It's a popularity count from 2024 to 2026, not a lab test.Is the MX Master worth it for editing?
For most editors on Reddit, yes: it lasts for years, pairs with three computers and has a thumb wheel for the timeline. The main complaint is weight, about 140 g, which sends some to the MX Anywhere or light gaming mice. It isn't made for left-handers, and one owner dislikes Logitech's software enough not to remap it.What's the best mouse for Premiere Pro on a MacBook?
In r/premiere's MacBook Air thread, the MX Master again leads, praised because its free-spinning wheel replaces the Magic Mouse swipe; the top reply, from a long-time owner, prefers the older MX Master 2S. Many Mac editors also keep a Magic Trackpad beside the mouse. G502 scrolling feels poor on a Mac, and one owner reports frequent reconnection trouble with Logitech mice.Is a vertical mouse or a trackball better for wrist pain, according to Reddit?
Both have converts, and neither works for everyone. Vertical-mouse users say an MX Vertical or a cheap Anker eased their pain after about a week; trackball users credit the MX Ergo or a Kensington for the same. One editor got hand strain from trackballs, and another found vertical mice moved the pain. These are personal reports, not medical advice; see a professional if it hurts. What's the best cheap mouse for video editing on Reddit?
The Anker vertical mouse, about $15 according to one owner, is a highly upvoted budget pick in r/editors, and one editor keeps three. In r/MouseReview, the top named budget pick is the VXE R1, and the most upvoted reply there just says to avoid Attack Shark; another owner had firmware trouble with one. The Logitech G502 is cheap enough that one facility bought it for every desk. What should I map my extra mouse buttons to for editing?
Timeline moves and trims. One r/editors reply with 11 points puts timeline zoom on forward and back and a cut on the button above the wheel; a TV editor puts trim left and right on the thumb buttons; a G502 owner maps jumps to the start and end of a clip. Start with the three actions you press most. How long does it take to get used to a Wacom for editing?
Weeks to months. Tablet users on Reddit say to use it exclusively for a week or two so it clicks, expect accidental drag-and-drops early on, and allow about six months before you're as fast as with a mouse. One editor got hand strain instead. The top reply in r/editors' mouse-versus-tablet thread says the reason to switch is comfort, not speed.Does Reddit recommend mouzeclick?
No. None of the 57 threads or 943 comments we read mentions it, and it isn't a mouse. We make mouzeclick, an app that maps per-app buttons, gestures and wheels on whichever mouse you choose, which is why it's on this page in a section labelled as our view. Its 3-day trial needs no card.Sources
